The Cowboys got back on the practice field after a few days away. Everyone seems to be giving their takes on Ezekiel Elliott's pending NFL investigation but the waters are still murky at best.

Cris Carter hints that he has inside information that Ezekiel Elliott will be suspended - Dave Halprin, Blogging The Boys
An unconfirmed report from Cris Carter provides some specificity regarding the Ezekiel Elliott situation.

Cris Carter went on FS1’s Undisputed show this morning and basically said that he has a source telling him that Ezekiel Elliott will be suspended and we should hear about it in the next 48 hours. He also said that information will come out that will make it easy to see why the NFL is suspending Zeke. He also hinted that the suspension would be more in the range of what Tom Brady got (four games) instead of the one or two games that have been referred to by other sources.

Roger Goodell shoots down Cris Carter's claim: "We haven’t made any decisions yet" on Ezekiel Elliott - OCC, Blogging The Boys
The latest in the NFL investigation of Ezekiel Elliott, nothing is ever as it seems in this ongoing situation.

Leaking information of this kind could be a strategy to buy some more time as the league gauges the PR-effect of the newest leak, for which Cris Carter was a convenient vehicle.

The NFL's investigation into Ezekiel Elliott has gone on for more than a year now, with still no clear resolution in sight. Jerry Jones has gone on record saying he doesn’t believe Elliott will be suspended based on the evidence he has seen. The season opener is not far away, so we'll likely see over the next few days how this plays out.

Signs pointing up at training camp - Clarence E. Hill, Fort Worth Star-Telegram
The Dallas Cowboys returned to practice Monday morning after a trip for the ages to the Pro Football Hall of Fame, winning their preseason opener, partying with Justin Timberlake and then celebrating the induction of owner Jerry Jones.

Eekiel Elliott and the NFL’s yearlong investigation into domestic violence and other issues remain the dark cloud hanging over camp. Elliott has gone about his business with focus and energy on the field. He missed much of camp last year so the reps he’s getting are invaluable, especially with him expected to be an even bigger part of the offense with an increased role in the passing game.

NFL has taken too long on Ezekiel Elliott investigation, Stephen Jones says - Drew Davison, Star-Telegram
It's been over a year, and still no end in sight.

For the time being, though, Elliott and the Cowboys hang in limbo. There was a report that surfaced early Monday when Fox Sports 1 and Hall of Fame wide receiver Cris Carter predicted that Elliott would be suspended within "the next 48 hours."

The NFL and Jones dismissed that report as speculation. The NFL says the matter is still being reviewed and commissioner Roger Goodell has brought on a panel of four experts to advise him in how to handle the situation. But the Cowboys remain hopeful that Elliott will be cleared of any possible game suspension.

"Hopefully we’ll have Zeke for the full 16," Jones said. "That’s what we’re counting on."

Garrett: "Poised, Composed" Rookie Cooper Rush Played Well In Debut At QB - Rob Phillips, Dallas Cowboys
As a third-string quarterback in training camp, practice reps are minimal for Cooper Rush.

"Thought he did a really good job," Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett said. "Thought he handled himself very well. Poised and composed. There were not many game situations that came up that he didn’t handle well. They did a few different things to him defensively and he recognized them, made some big plays. The touchdown was a big play and he really did a nice job on that play, recognizing the Cover 0 blitz and getting it to the right guy."

Jason Garrett's message to Dallas Cowboys: Time to focus on the field - Todd Archer, ESPN
Coming off a whirlwind trip for Hall of Fame festivities, Jason Garrett made it clear to the Cowboys that it's time to get back to work.

"Oh, well, the message has been pretty clear that we’re going back to work. I think that’s what good teams do," tight end Jason Witten said. "You’ve got to be mature. You’ve got to be professionals. As great as that weekend was -- and it was an unbelievable experience that we’ll always remember for the rest of our lives to see Mr. Jones go into the Hal of Fame -- now we’ve got to go back and our focus is on what we want to try to accomplish as a football team."

Cowboys back in training camp mode - Drew Davison, Fort Worth Star-Telegram
The Dallas Cowboys returned to their training camp headquarters after almost a week away on Monday.

"I think our team handled the last few days really, really well," Garrett said. "We had a good practice on Tuesday before we left, handled the typical travel day before the game, had our meetings and our walkthrough leading up to the Thursday night game. A lot of our starting, front line players did not play in the game. They got a good workout beforehand. The guys who played in the game obviously got their number of snaps."

Darren Woodson: Rookie CBs bring something Cowboys secondary has lacked - SportsDay
Woodson, the former Dallas Cowboys safety and a member of the club's Ring of Honor, joined Sportsday DFW to answer some questions about the current Cowboys.

"And for the two young corners, Chidobe Awuzie and Jourdan Lewis, they're your early picks, and the expectation that I hear from training camp and hear about what they've done in the OTAs, there's something about these kids. There's an aggressiveness. This secondary has lacked ball skills and going after balls and being aggressive and making tackles, and the Cowboys went out and drafted two young guys right now that they expect to come up and make tackles and make big plays on the football this year."

Position Battle Blog: The Contenders To Fill Out LB Depth Chart? - Bryan Broaddus, Dallas Cowboys
Throughout training camp, Bryan Broaddus will break down every position battle on the roster, analyzing players’ roles and their impact in practice.Today, the linebackers are on the docket.

Kyle Wilber and Mark Nzeocha are possible starters at the strong side linebacker as well. Wilber has shown up in camp with a chip on his shoulder, which we haven’t seen in years past. He has always had the ability to make a key play in the game but has never held on to a full-time spot. At this point, it has been one of his best training camps.

Tyron Smith set to return to practice after week off - Todd Archer, ESPN
Apparently, a week of rest did the trick for Tyron Smith, who was able to return to practice Monday after missing time with a sore back.

The Dallas Cowboys’ All-Pro left tackle will return to practice Monday, according to coach Jason Garrett, although Smith could be limited in some drills. Smith sat out two practices a week ago after reporting some tightness in his back. He flew with the Cowboys to Canton, Ohio, for the Hall of Fame Game (he did not play) and the induction ceremony.

Cowboys say Jaylon Smith healthy enough to play in game; debut could come Saturday in Los Angeles - Jon Machota, SportsDay
The Cowboys haven't determined if Jaylon Smith will make his preseason debut Saturday night against the Los Angeles Rams.

"We're just seeing how he progresses," Jones said. "No need to jump ahead and make a decision whether it's this week or next week or whatever it may be. The big thing about Jaylon so far is it seems to be better every time he goes out there. He's more and more comfortable with it. At the same time, if you left it up to him, he would've been going every play out there during the Hall of Fame game [Thursday night].
