Latest Cowboys headlines: Drew Pearson expects Brice Butler to step up this season; why you should take Ezekiel Elliott for your fantasy team with the utmost confidence; Cowboys done in free agency?

Who the Cowboys are counting on to step up at No. 2 receiver next season - Newy Scruggs, SportsDay
In a chat with fans, Scruggs offered Drew Pearson's take on which wide receiver might step up this season.

I'm lucky to have Drew Pearson around to ask questions to and he believes Brice Butler can become a good receiver. We've seen Tony Romo make players like Miles Austin,Laurent Robinson and Cole Beasley into productive wide receivers. Drew Pearson thinks Butler has the talent to become a solid contributor.

Terrance Williams was a disappointment last year. With Dez Bryant missing time he never took advantage of his shot as the number one guy and I don't want to hear about how Romo only played in four games. Hall of Famer Tim Brown once told me sometimes a receiver has to makes his quarterback look good. Williams was lucky the Cowboys have other needs and they didn't use a premium pick on a wide receiver.
One scout says the Cowboys may have got the best value pick in the whole draft - Newy Scruggs, SportsDay
Scruggs talked about Cowboys rookie DE Charles Tapper in a recent live chat.

I know Mike Freeman of Bleacher Report loves Tapper, calling him the best value pick in the draft. He wrote: The Cowboys selected Oklahoma's Charles Tapper in the fourth round. One NFC scout told me he believes that pick was one of the best in the draft. Why? He's 6'3" and 271 pounds and runs a 4.59 40-yard dash. What scared some teams, this scout explained, was that Tapper has the sickle cell trait. It's considered relatively minor, presenting a problem mostly in conditions such as high altitudes. The Cowboys don't play in Denver this season, and the NFL hasn't placed a franchise on Mount Kilimanjaro, so he'll be just fine.

Was Terrance a disappointment, or was he a #2 receiver forced to play significant #1 reps? Was he also playing with sub par qbs and/or a scheme that refused to adjust to the talents of said QBs?

He's not nearly as poor a receiver as some want to say he is. He's not a #1 receiver, but we knew that when we drafted him.

I also place a lot of blame on our offensive scheme, which never schemes to get anyone open but forces them to be superior athletes to everyone else on the field.

I think Butler can challenge Williams, but my biggest question for him is can he stay healthy. If we run the ball heavily, a #2 in our offense is going to need to be more Alvin Harper then Anquan Boldin. Butler has the size speed and agility to attack mutliple areas of the field.

If anything him beating Williams gives us some piece of mind with Williams entering a walk year.

I wish someone would post the avg numbers for a #2 and compare it with our #2.

Agreed, also hoping to see Brice stay healthy and see what he can do.

My biggest issue with TW or what i like to call him Terrance ( Return of the body catcher) Williams is that he has to catch the ball with his body which means he doesn't win alot of contested balls

I don't like giving anyone a pass and saying they are ok being average or less because they are just a #2 receiver. I understand the second receiver isn't going to get the opportunities as the #1 guy....BUT...
If given the opportunity to be the #1 then I expect he can step up and be pretty close to the #1 in production.
We are 1 play away from Williams being the #1 for an entire season...if he can't do it then find a new #2 who can.

Twill is just a streaky player. He's actually at his best when the play breaks down. We still need another WR IMO, so hopefully Butler and Lucky step up.

As posted above, Butler will start by replacing Street, in which I really think he already has. It will be up to Brown to knock Street off the roster if they keep 6. Whitehead's 5th spot may be contested too by Brown, Andrew Jones even.

I do think Butler can push Williams for playing time, but won't say the #2 WR, not just yet. Will need to see it in TC.

Williams will play this season giving it all he has because its a contract and year and that's what nfl players do. I don't think dallas will resign him any way regardless of how good he is they have to many others they will want to sign like offensive linemen.

I am also glad to see that they are not interested in Cromartie, so hopefully all that is put to rest. as far as any one saying Cromartie is better than what we have. apparently he isn't in the eyes of the FO. regardless of what he wants in a contract. Just not going to happen.

Twill is a solid two. Butler needs to push street off the roster first of all. But butler has a chance to show he may can be the two next year and that would really be nice. Lucky to me is more of a slot guy because his strength is ability with the ball in space.

He and Romo have good chemistry in those situations.

So if Brice Butler was our #2, and been given the opportunity to be the #1, you expect him to be pretty close to #1 in production? (with a backup qb like BWeeden, MCassel, etc.)

I'd like to see Butler and Williams on the outside with Bryant in the slot. That would really challenge a defense to defend Witten and Dez in the middle with speed and size on the outside.
