Latest Cowboys headlines: Cowboys are looking to make it six wins in a row over the Giants; Dez Bryant officially ruled out; will Matt Cassel breathe new life into Cowboys?
Season sweep within reach for Cowboys - Milt Northrop, BN Blitz
Northrop notes that the return games are showing up on the schedule for the first time in 2015, with the Vikings and the Cowboys both looking for a season sweep of their division rivals.
The title of this post is an obvious spoiler here: The Cowboys aren't just looking for a season sweep for this season, they are looking to make it six wins in a row over the Giants, which would give them three consecutive season sweeps.
With air of a starter, Matt Cassel breathes new life into Cowboys | Drew Davison, The Star-Telegram
Davison offers up a few quotes from said Charlie Weis, the Chiefs’ offensive coordinator in 2010, on what to expect from Cassel.
"We never underestimated his ability," said Weis. "He spent a lot of time running play-action and he was very productive with that and made very few mistakes."
"Matt’s going to show up [for the Cowboys] and he’ll know what to do. We all know Tony is the guy in Dallas. Matt knows that, you know that, I know that … but they’re in a situation where they need someone to get them to a healthy Tony. No disrespect to Weeden because I don’t know him very well, but I think Matt has a chance to get you there."
Dez Bryant Officially Ruled Out For Sunday - Nick Eatman, Dallas Cowboys
The game of will-he-or-won't-he finally came to an end sometime yesterday when the Cowboys officially ruled Dez Bryant out for today's game.
How I think the Cowboys' offense will attack the Giants - Jon Machota, SportsDay
Machota crafts a fairly simple gameplan for the Cowboys, but would this really be enough?
I would stick with the Jason Garrett game plan vs. New York. I'd go in planning to establish the run early, get Cassel going on some short tosses to Witten and Beasley and look to find Terrance with some play action. This is a Giants defense that has done well against the run and has been horrible against the pass. If the Giants are stuffing the run, I'm letting Cassel go down field on a secondary that I don't think is very good.
Rainy forecast doesn’t bother kicker Dan Bailey | Drew Davison, The Star-Telegram
The forecast calls for a 50 percent chance of rain today in New Jersey during gametime. The Cowboys prepared for inclement weather by having Dan Bailey practice with wet footballs (I cannot stress enough how important it is that this sentence ends with footballs).
Bailey said the only difference with kicking in the rain is the ball may get heavier and shortens his distance.
"You might lose a couple yards of distance because of the weight of the ball," Bailey said. "But the ball flight and all of that stuff is pretty much the same."
Giants’ putrid pass rush getting glimmer of hope vs. Cowboys - Howie Kussay, New York Post
Linebacker Devon Kennard and defensive end Robert Ayers could be back for the Giants on Sunday, and those two provide the "glimmer of hope" from the title. That faint glimmer will be quickly snuffed out by the Cowboys O-line.
Giants-Cowboys Preview: Offensive Line Will Be Crucial - Bill Pennington, The New York Times
For Pennington, the matchup to watch will be the Cowboys' passrushers vs. Giants’ offensive line
It is hard to overstate how much the Giants’ offensive line is the key to the team’s fortunes, offensively and defensively. The defense has performed reasonably well at times, but only if it is not left on the field for exceedingly long periods. With the Giants in the no-huddle offense most of the time, if the offensive line does not block well, the Giants frequently give the ball back quickly, which again only amplifies the pressure on the defense.
Eli Manning has been effective leading the offense if given time to survey the field. If not, as was the case in the Giants’ loss to the Eagles last week, the offense fizzles.
Things could change, but I don't think signing Greg Hardy to an extension would make sense for Cowboys - Bob Sturm, SportsDay
In response to a reader question, Sturm is a little hesitant about the Cowboys committing to Greg Hardy longterm.
Question: Seems like a popular question, but do you see the Cowboys signing Hardy to an extension?
Bob Sturm: I really don't think it would make too much sense for me. Now, we have seen one game and he was dominant. I might change my tune by the holidays if he strings together 6 more of these and saves the season. But, as it stands, I don't think 5 years for say, $70m makes sense for the Cowboys. But, I assume that is exactly the price he would seek back on the open market with his man, Mr Rosenhaus.
The three positions I think Cowboys should target in first three rounds of 2016 draft - Bob Sturm, SportsDay
Sturm expects a draft heavy on the skill positions.
In short, I think the top 3 spots I am looking for if I am the Cowboys in Rounds 1-3 would be QB, RB, and WR in any order. I obviously have other needs, too, like safety, but those 3 skill spots are first on the list.
The Jets built a potent offense the ‘wrong’ way. Can it still carry them to the playoffs? - Chase Stuart, Washington Post
If you're a football strategist, this is something you'll want to watch very closely, as it runs counter to many cherished NFL beliefs.
The Jets have constructed the offense in a manner that runs counter to what’s usually considered the "right" way to build a franchise. Rather than building the foundation of their offense from within, the Jets have pieced together this offense by acquiring other teams’ veterans.
The Jets went to market for their QB, RB, WR1, and WR2. That's a pretty unique strategy that appears to be paying off for the 4-1 Jets.
