Cooper Rush took reps with the second-team, is he on his way to taking the job?
Backup QB controversy? Cooper Rush gets second-team reps on Monday - Clarence Hill, Fort Worth Star-Telegram
Kellen Moore has long been believed to have the Dallas Cowboys backup job secured. But is Cooper Rush making a push for it?
Rush has simply been more productive, completing 26-of-38 passes for 283 yards with four touchdowns and no interceptions and 125.2 quarterback rating over three games.
Rookie QB Cooper Rush gets second-team reps at Cowboys practice - John Machota, SportsDay
So far in camp, Rush had been only getting third-team snaps. But that changed yesterday.
Cooper Rush's impressive play during training camp and three preseason games has earned him a new opportunity. During Monday's practice the undrafted rookie free agent out of Central Michigan mixed in with Kellen Moore to get second-team reps in team drills.
Veteran backup Kellen Moore has struggled in the previous two preseason games, opening the door for the team to consider Cooper, who has completed 26 of his 38 passes with four touchdowns and no interceptions this preseason.
Cowboys stock report: Risers and fallers after the preseason game against the Colts - DannyPhantom, Blogging The Boys
How did Jaylon Smith do in his NFL debut? Who should be the Cowboys backup QB, Kellen Moore or Cooper Rush? Check out the latest stock report after the Cowboys preseason game against the Colts
Believe it or not, there are still so many people out there trying to rationalize why Kellen Moore should still be the number two quarterback. I’m doing my very best to keep an open mind and understand that there could be something I don’t get that adds more value to Moore’s existence on the team than I realize, but it’s a struggle with each new preseason game.
Mon. Practice Recap: Camp At The Star; Cooper Rush Works With The 2’s - Dallas Cowboys
At the end of the day, Monday’s practice was incredibly similar to the 17 that came before it. The Cowboys stretched, they went through a walkthrough, they split into position groups. They held one-on-one Compete Periods, seven-on-seven drills and full-team periods. The whole thing lasted roughly two hours.
Cooper Rush has been outstanding in three preseason games, throwing four touchdown passes with no interceptions, and perhaps the coaching staff was rewarding the rookie quarterback Monday by giving him a handful of reps with the second-team offense near the end of practice. Kellen Moore took the majority of the second-team reps behind starter Dak Prescott, as usual.
Scout's Notebook: Defensive Awareness, Strides By The WRs; More - Bryan Broaddus, Dallas Cowboys
Broaddus reflects on Saturday's game, here's an excerpt.
There is a good reason why Rod Marinelli trusts Orlando Scandrick as a blitzer. Scandrick has a sense of where to position himself in order to disguise the blitz and the timing to execute it. The Colts attempted to run a quick screen to the outside, with Scandrick coming off the edge. Scandrick was able to get into the throwing lane and extend his right arm in order to knock the ball into the air.
Dallas Cowboys unveil Ring of Honor Walk with 16 members in attendance-Todd Archer- ESPN
The Cowboys' Ring of Honor members, including Emmitt Smith, now also have monuments acknowledging their careers at The Star.
“This is a great way to be memorialized within the Cowboys' facility and everything they’re doing here around here in Texas,” said Smith, the NFL’s all-time leading rusher. “Those monuments will be there for a long time. If my kids ever forget what their daddy used to do, they can always have a place to go. So it’s great. It’s wonderful.”
Michael Irvin sees Hall of Famer in Jaylon Smith: 'I do believe one day he will walk into Canton' - Brandon George, SportsDay
Cowboys second-year linebacker Jaylon Smith played his first game in almost 600 days Saturday against the Colts.
"As I talk through journeys and end results, I can't wait until you see Jaylon Smith here one day," said Irvin, a Hall of Famer himself. "I still have his card from the day I drafted him and I showed him that card. I said I'm going to hold this until you walk into Canton, Ohio, baby, and then I'm going to ask you to autograph it.”
As Camp Resumes At The Star, Cowboys Recognize Past With Ring Of Honor Walk - Rob Phillips, Dallas Cowboys
Hours before the 2017 Dallas Cowboys brought training camp to The Star in Frisco, the organization paid tribute to its prestigious past.
“It’s always about tradition. We’ve got the greatest tradition that anybody could have, and it will be reflected and enjoyed here at the Star.” -Jerry Jones
Can Rod Smith break into the Cowboys running back rotation? - Cole Patterson, Blogging The Boys
Rod Smith is not only making his case to make the 53-man roster, but to also make an impact in the backfield.
“Smith finished the game with 53 yards on only seven carries — averaging more than seven yards per touch. It wasn’t just a one game wonder, either. Smith also impressed in the Cowboys’ Hall of Fame game against the Cardinals back in Ohio. In that game, the former Buckeye rushed 18 times for 64 yards. While not eye-popping stats, he still looked like a capable back during the contest.”
The next great sack artist? Where top rookie pass-rushers stand - Dan Graziano-ESPN
Just how rare is it for rookies to get double-digit sacks? It has happened only six times in the past 10 years, including last season. Top pick Myles Garrett might be the best bet in 2017, but there's buzz elsewhere.
The Cowboys view Charlton as a project pass-rusher who needs time and reps to work on developing and refining his moves. Suspensions on the defensive side of the ball could result in a greater need early in the season for Charlton to snag the pass-rushing snaps for which the Cowboys deem him ready, but don't be surprised if his role is limited to start while coaches work with him on being more consistent with his assignments in practice.
This isn't a knock on Charlton, who has had a strong camp. It's just that he's not a finished product, and coaches often hesitate to trust rookies in big spots until they're 100 percent sure they're ready.
Could improved Dak Prescott-Dez Bryant chemistry offset Elliott absence? - Clarence Hill, Fort Worth Star-Telegram
Quarterback Dak Prescott and receiver Dez Bryant, who have been connecting throughout training camp, put their improved chemistry on display against the Indianapolis Colts with a 32-yard touchdown pass, offering a glimpse one way the team will mitigate the absence of suspended running back Ezekiel Elliott.
“Yeah, you know they’ve played a lot of football together in a short period of time,” coach Jason Garrett said. “They continue to grow. I think they have a very good relationship on the field and they have a very good relationship off the field and their communication is really good. I think it reflects in the execution.”
Stephen Jones on who should be the Cowboys backup QB, “let’s see how it plays out” - DannyPhantom, Blogging The Boys
While many think that Kellen Moore has already set up shop as the Cowboys backup quarterback, rookie Cooper Rush might have something to say about it. This battle is far from over.
"That would be unfair to say at this point," Jones said. "Let's just see how it plays out. The one thing I would say is every time he gets an opportunity he takes advantage of it in spades. I'm real pleased with him.”
