Latest Cowboys headlines: Cowboys look to develop young QBs; Cowboys need to creat takeaways; team mum on McClain's future.
Cowboys Content To Develop Young QBs Over Pursuing Veteran Backup - David Helman, Dallas Cowboys
Stephen Jones announced that youth is served at the Cowboys' backup quarterback position going forward.
"Cincinnati last year had a really solid football team. You look at what they did with A.J. [mcCarron], a fifth-round pick out of the SEC and he came in and had every opportunity and, nothing to do with him, had a chance to win a playoff game for them," Jones said. "So, at some point you've got to commit your resources to getting your young guys ready or you're always in that mode of older, veteran guys."
"They developed him," Jones said. "He really played well for the Bengals in Cincinnati, and we've got to do the same thing."
Asked if he was interested in pursuing a more experienced option, such as recently-released Rams quarterback Nick Foles, team owner/general manager Jerry Jones didn’t mince any words.
"Foles isn't an option," he said. "We can't get him any snaps. We’ve got four that are going to get snaps."
Under-the-radar preseason storylines - Cowboys need to creat takeaways - Staff, ESPN
Todd Archer looks at the Cowboys' under-the-radar storyline, and comes up with secondary coach Joe Baker.
Here's why: The Cowboys promoted Joe Baker to secondary coach in the offseason and he has one task: create takeaways. Brandon Carr has not had an interception in 36 straight games. Orlando Scandrick has never had more than two in a season and is coming off a serious knee injury that kept him off the field in 2015. Morris Claiborne has one pick in his past 19 games. While an improved pass rush will help create takeaways, the corners have to find a way to make plays on their own.
McClain still on team, but Dallas Cowboys mum on his future - David Humphrey, The Star-Telegram
The Cowboys were tight-lipped about McClain despite repeatedly being prompted on the topic, but what little they said sounded ominous.
"We’re going to focus on what we’re dealing with right now. As we move forward, we’ll deal with other issues that come up," Stephen Jones said.
"He’s not here and we’ll move on," Stephen Jones said.
'We're gonna move on from some guys' says Garrett, as good a Ro hint as #Cowboys ready to give. @1053thefan
