Twenty months had lapsed since we saw Orlando Scandrick take the field as a Dallas Cowboy, but fans got a brief reminder of what he means to the Dallas defense during the contest with Miami.
Orlando Scandrick finished the 2014 season as the best cornerback on the Dallas Cowboys roster. To be truthful, he was the only one of the corners that inspired any confidence in the fans. When his entire 2015 season was lost due to tears to his right ACL and MCL, it was an omen of what was to come for the season.
More than a year and a half after having played his last competitive snap, #32 returned to the field for the Dallas Cowboys and he turned in a credible performance against the Miami Dolphins last weekend. The Cowboys are following a similar path to the one that helped Sean Lee regain form after a similar injury that cost the linebacker the entire 2014 season. They limited the veteran cornerback to just 11 snaps during his return to action.
It was a matter of quality over quantity for Scandrick. During a deep drive by the Phins he and Morris Claiborne stepped up on consecutive snaps to make crucial pass break ups in the endzone and stall the Miami scoring threat.
"I thought he did a good job. It was good to see him out there. He didn’t play that many snaps but he certainly looked comfortable. He’s another guy who’s worked so hard to come back. It’s a real tribute to the approach he’s taken." - Jason Garrett
It was not only in pass coverage that Orlando earned recognition. He also stepped up in run support for the Cowboys.
"He’s practiced well leading up to it [his return] so I think he had some confidence going in. And he showed up. He showed up as a run defender. He was pretty active making some plays."
Scandrick took away some positives from the game, but he knows that he is still a work in progress. True to what his coach has preached ever since taking over the team,he is working hard to get a little better with each practice session.
"It was a process and every day I got better and better and every day I want to continue to get better and better. I’m not sure that I’m all the way back right now. I’m playing good football. I’m making plays at times, but I’m not sure that I’m all the way back. But what I can assure you is when I walk on that field at 3:25 on Sept. 11 I’ll be all the way back and ready to go." - Orlando Scandrick
Fans were glad to see Scandrick return to action and even more pleased to see that he was sticking his helmet into the action and making plays. Dallas will continue to proceed with some degree of caution and enjoy the improved play of Morris Claiborne and Brandon Carr in the preseason. Once the season gets here, Scandrick assures us he'll take his regular role in the defense.
