The Dallas Cowboys delivered a lackluster performance on Monday Night Football, but after the game some players stepped up and held themselves accountable.

"I feel like I played my worst game since I've been a Dallas Cowboy. I played terrible." - Barry Church

Barry Church has emerged over the past several seasons to become a solid piece in a beleaguered Dallas Cowboys secondary. On Monday night, the former UDFA out of the University of Toledo looked anything but solid. against the Commanders. There were two critical plays where Church missed tackles which helped to lead to 10 points for the enemy. On the first missed opportunity, Church allowed Niles Paul to pick up 20 yards to help set up the first Washington score, a field goal. He also missed a tackle allowing Alfred Morris to pick up nearly 30 yards on the first possession after halftime. That contributed to a Skins touchdown.

"I missed two wide-open tackles out there, and there were just a lot of missed tackles on the defensive side of the ball. If we want to win and be the defense we want to be, we just can't let that happen."

It was not just Church who realized that Dallas blew an opportunity by coming out flat. Pro Bowl wide receiver Dez Bryant was clear that they knew where fault lies.

"We let this one slip away. We have to look at ourselves in the mirror. As a team, we let one slip away." Dez Bryant

Bryant is correct; as bad as Dallas played, Washington still had to go to overtime to win the game. Just one or two plays made during regulation would have allowed the Cowboys to improve to 7-1 on the season. The problem was that nobody stepped up and made the plays. For that they can only fault themselves. When opportunity knocked on the door, the Cowboys tried to answer the telephone. That will not get it done if they want to consider themselves among the elite of the National Football League.

If there is any good news to come out of this loss, it is that the players clearly know what went wrong and they know what to do to fix it.
