The Cowboys are practicing and preparing for the New York Giants.

It’s getting so close now, the Dallas Cowboys will kick off their 2016 season this Sunday against the New York Giants. As such, they are getting into their regular routine of practices, press conferences and injury updates.

As for injuries, the Cowboys are missing three players today, which is actually a fairly low number as these things go. Of course, missing your starting quarterback more than makes up for the low quantity. Tony Romo was out, like he will be for the next few weeks or more, but Jason Garrett did reiterate what Jerry Jones tried to say yesterday, but got garbled in the mess that is Jerryspeak. They think Romo will be back sooner than the eight-game span that would be imposed if they moved him to IR.

“In Tony’s case, the IR term is for eight weeks and we feel like, given what the injury is and the progress he’s made, we feel at this point we don’t want to do that,” Garrett said. “We don’t want to eliminate him from eight weeks of our schedule. He’s making progress.”

“Initially, when he had the injury, he was pretty immobilized,” Garrett said. “Over the course of the last week or so he’s gotten better and better and better.”

Also missing from practice were Mark Nzeocha and Charles Tapper. Nzeocha is still dealing with the Achilles strain that occurred during a preseason game. Tapper, meanwhile, is healing from his own vertebra fracture.

The Cowboys also made a move to complete their 10-man practice squad, signing defensive end Chris McClain. The Cowboys made three additions yesterday, with McClain they are now set.

McCain signed undrafted with the Dolphins following the 2014 NFL Draft. He played 19 total games for Miami in two seasons, registering two career sacks. The Dolphins traded McCain to New Orleans just last week, though he was subsequently cut just five days later.
