The Cowboys battle the Rams in the first preseason game of 2016 for both teams

This Saturday, the Dallas Cowboys play a football game. Yes, it's just a preseason game, but on the long road back from the awful 2015 season and the horrible 4-12 record, this represents a major milestone. Football is back. The Cowboys will travel just a little south from Oxnard to play the Los Angeles Rams. You heard that right, the Los Angeles Rams. Football has returned to the City of the Angels and the Cowboys will be the opponent for their first organized game, even though it's just preseason.

The Cowboys head into this game with a few major objectives, besides the always overriding theme of preseason - no injuries. They want to see just how Dak Prescott and Jameill Showers perform in a game-like situation. Dallas is still deciding whether they want to bring in a veteran quarterback to be their backup, or if they'll ride with the youngsters. This game will probably go a long way to helping make that decision. If they play well, the Cowboys may choose to wait a little longer, if they bomb, the organization may choose to quit waiting and make a move.

Dallas also will want to see how some of the young, inexperienced talent along the defensive line plays. We all know about the suspension to DeMarcus Lawrence and Randy Gregory, so having some of the young guys perform well is critical in the first quarter of the season. Saturday's game will be a good test. Other notable things to watch: the linebacker rotation, Darius Jackson at running back, and can WR Andy Jones continue his hot streak.
