The Cowboys have signed Morris Claiborne to a one-year, $3 million contract, that maxes out at $3.7 million.

The Cowboys traded their first and second round picks to select Morris Claiborne as the No. 6 overall pick in the 2012 draft. Claiborne was dogged by injuries throughout his career and missed a total of 24 regular-season games in his first four years. He never lived up to his high draft pedigree, collecting just three interceptions in those four years.

When he's been healthy, he's been a solid, if largely unspectacular corner. He was good enough to get the start in 11 games last year, but injuries derailed his season once again.

Last year, the Cowboys declined to pick up the fifth-year option on Claiborne's contract, which would have paid Claiborne about $11 million in 2016. Now they are getting the same player for $3 million, which is a very good price for a player who was solid in 2015 but didn't make a lot of plays.

The Cowboys are still mulling their options on CB Nolan Carroll, whom they brought in for an interview, and may also make some kind of decision on Brandon Carr soon as they get their secondary in order for 2016. A secondary that will also include Orlando Scandrick, Byron Jones, and perhaps a 2016 rookie.

If Claiborne stays healthy, and if he can stop worrying about his high draft pedigree, he might turn in his best year yet for the Cowboys, a year that could set him up for a big payday in 2017.

Claiborne is the fifth free agent the Cowboys have signed week, and confirms that the Cowboys were not kidding when they said they'd focus on re-signing their own.
