The Dallas Cowboys have flipped the trigger on Sean Lee, creating an additional $5 million in cap space.
The Dallas Cowboys have got themselves a bit more salary cap space after flipping the trigger on linebacker Sean Lee’s contract. With the free agent market set to open on Thursday, Dallas was sitting at under $4 million in cap space, which was the least cap space in the league.

Just like Dallas has done every year with big contracts, they add triggers that can be flipped in efforts to sign some of their own in free agency. Prior to today the Cowboys only had $3.2 million in cap space, hardly enough to sign many of their 18 pending free agents. This move creates a little over $5 million in salary cap relief, giving the Cowboys close to $9 million to work with. This likely won’t be the only restructure in the coming two days before the new league year begins on Thursday, and Dallas has already flipped triggers on Travis Frederick and Tyron Smith.
Lee had a sensational 2016 season and was healthy for the whole time. This coming season he hopes to have a new partner with Jaylon Smith set to join him at the position.
We’ll see how the Cowboys plan to use this new money in the coming days.
