As we know, issues abound for the Dallas Cowboys. As our chief here at Blogging The Boys, Dave Halprin, recently wrote, the only part of the team that is in really solid shape is the special teams unit. Both the offense and defense are in need of a lift, and now that the team is into its bye week, the pro scouting department has brought in several players, on both sides of the ball, for the coaches to take a look at. According to Rowan Kavner over at the mothership, the team is looking at 16 players in an attempt to bolster the roster.
The first area that they are looking to add some strength is in the defensive secondary. The biggest name that they are looking at is former Oakland Raiders first round draft pick Michael Huff, but other potential additions include Jordan Pugh, Nick Saenz, George Baker, T.J. Heath and Brandon Hughes. Huff played for the Raiders from 2006-2012 before he joined the Baltimore Ravens for this season. He was recently released from that team after playing in seven games. One other guy who might find himself being brought in is former Raven Ed Reed, who was recently let go by the Houston Texans. (According to Calvin Watkins, a Dallas source says the Cowboys will pass on Reed.)
Another area of need that the Cowboys are expected to address will be in the trenches on both sides of the ball. With the loss of Brian Waters the Cowboys again find themselves dealing with some shortcomings on the offensive line. To address the need, Chris DeGeare, Brandon Keith, Ryan Miller, Eric Olsen, Wayne Tribue and John Wetzel have been brought to Valley Ranch for Bill Callahan and his offensive staff to take a look at. Along the other side of the line, the season-long attempt to find new faces continues. Rod Marinelli will be looking at potential replacement rushmen Logan Harrell, Corvey Irvin, Ogemdi Nwagbuo and Torell Troup.
Outside of Huff (and Reed if the Cowboys do consider him), there are not a lot of highly known names in the bunch, but several of the guys being evaluated do have decent draft pedigrees. Torell Troup is a former second-round selection of the Buffalo Bills back in 2010 and Corey Irvin was a third-round selection of the Carolina Panthers back in 2009.
