Cowboys Secondary: A Fix Is Needed
by Dave Halprin

Going into the 2010 season, it appeared that the Cowboys were a team with a solid set of cornerbacks. As we all know, you need three good corners to make a defense truly feared, and the Cowboys had Terence Newman, Mike Jenkins and Orlando Scandrick. Newman and Jenkins had made recent forays to Hawaii for the Pro Bowl. Newman was the steady veteran who had battled injuries recently, but was still game. Jenkins shook off a poor 2008 season to become an up-and-comer in 2009, a year that showcased his good ball skills and ability to close on the ball in the air. Scandrick was the nickel guy who made the package complete.

Then came 2010. Jenkins regressed terribly, so much that fans and coaches alike were wondering what happened. We know he has the talent, but penalties and poor technique brought his game to a crashing halt. Newman continued with his injury issues and hobbled his way through a mediocre at best season, some games he was much worse. Only Scandrick seemed to keep his form.

So, where do the Cowboys go from here?...

I have really gotten sad about BTB since Raf left. Quality is way down. Way too many surface articles like this one. TNew was badly injured; having to have a 3 inch needle stuck into his ribcage for every game. His flexibility was really stamped on. So blaming him for a bad season sounds frankly stupid.

Once again this article tries to downplay just how much Ball being around messed everything else up.

I see the name Antonio Cromartie being thrown around that article.

Garrett won't want him.

Articles done by the site owner don't measure up to Raf's, agreed. The most current on Raf's new site are already on site at present.

But one thing was brought up that meets one's eye. The weakness up the very middle of the Cowboy's 3-4 defense that an umbrella functioning should eliminate. Authoriship can't deprive the homerun on that principal being revealed to a common reader.

The authors in the field certainly haven't taken to heart character evaluations in all present members of the roster. Agreed.

Before this year's draft, I would've agreed with you about this, but I have to say BTB's draft analysis, at least with regard to the offense, was far more insightful than anything Vela or his "guests" (or anyone else) has offered.

You are being selective in view, somewhat as well...they both contribute and have socially redeemable features. Maybe the lawyers for players should take that quality to heart as well. We all await to see how the current planning by the Cowboys work out.

The opinion presented was selectivity-based, incumbent as it was upon exampleship, also completely. The essence of the implied intent boasted no exclusivity among its aspects, insomuch as that espoused being wholly or always preferable.

The part you referenced was merely tone setter, this was my intended punchline:

Yet, you felt compelled to digress in style discussion, not even direction of focus. Yea, go figure...:D

all those that use lawyer speak should be boiled slowly in oil.

This is how I see it. I think from here on out any pickups we make whether through trades, FA or the draft will be Garrett kind of guys. What I mean by that is, they have the right kind of attitude and do anything necessary to win.

I think they really can only do so much with what they have but I suspect not everyone on the roster is a Garrett player and I think over the course of the next few seasons he'll weed those players out.

Good view there...:star:

Newman no dubt had to deal with nagging stuff - he was not "badly injured". Frankly i saw something of a dropoff from him last year, but nothing dramatic. He is what he is - a good NFL CB, but not an outstanding one.

The real concern is Jenkins. If he can return to his 2009 form we are in good shape, and if he plays to his 201 form we are in bad shape. It's really as simple as that. We just don't know what we have with Jenkins yet - there is a bizarre range to consider with him. Hopefully he will prove to be the 2009 guy on a consistent basis.

Scandrick is fine as a No. 3 guy. Good but not outstanding in that role.

I agree I think much of the success or failure of the secondary will fall to Jenkins.

It just seems to make sense. Neither Newman or Scandrick are stars in their roles, but we know they are at least reasonable players that can be part of a solid secondary, but Jenkins is a wild card. He's ranged from great to terrible in his short time in the NFL.

Let me say I do think Newman is still one of the better CB in the league, I'm not going to get into he is a top 5 or top 10 CB discussions

As for Jenkins I agree he has shown what he is capable of in playing to a high level in 09 and he has shown how poor he can play. I think the kid has talent and I think it is the role of the coaches to get through to him and get the most out of him. If they can't then Jenkins stay here may not be a long one.

I advocate making significant changes in the Cowboys secondary.

At the very least, I am replacing both safeties.

And if financially possible, I would do everything I could to make a Newman/Asomugha switch happen.

Given the investment made in the offensive line in the draft (and possibly free agency as well), I think the secondary is now this team's most glaring need.

I think Sensabough is a reasonable player within a team framework. In other words, if the overall talent in the seondary is sold he can fit in nicely But if much of the secondary is weak he just isn't a strong enough player o cover for it.
