The Cowboys still have a help wanted sign out at safety, perhaps Eric Berry can fill the position.

The Dallas Cowboys had a nice pickup with the signing of wide receiver Randall Cobb, but the other visitor from Monday, Clayton Geathers, will reportedly not be joining the team.

This leaves safety as the biggest unaddressed position of need for Dallas. And that puts more importance on the situation with Eric Berry. Berry visited the Cowboys on Tuesday, along with Robert Quinn, but like Geathers, he left without a deal.

However, we don’t know if a contract offer was actually made to either Geathers or Berry. The visits involve both sides seeing if they want to go forward, and either, or both, may decide it is not the match they want. Additionally, free agents often use visits to get a better deal even if it is from another team. That may have been what Geathers did, and with Berry being a “bigger” name, it could well be what the latter is doing as well.

While the Cowboys still have a real need to upgrade at safety, the situation is not dire yet. There are still good safeties on the market. And based on Rotoworld’s ranking of available free agents, options that are ahead of Geathers (and just behind Berry) are Tre Boston, Glover Quin, George Iloka, and Jahleel Addae.

There is also the possibility that Geathers was always “Plan B” once Dallas saw that Berry was still available after the first wave of free agency, and he was either told or came to suspect it.

In any case, he has now returned to his original team, and the work continues for the Cowboys.
