The Cowboys will play the first game of the season in 2017, even if it is just a preseason game.
The Dallas Cowboys will face the Arizona Cardinals in the preseason Hall of Fame game on August 3rd, 2017. The game will be played at 7:00 PM EST that Thursday night.

With Jerry Jones scheduled to be inducted into the Hall of Fame that following Saturday, Aug 5th, it made sense for the league to have the Cowboys play in this game. Kurt Warner will also be inducted and played part of his career with the Cardinals so there is a tie-in on that side, although almost everybody remembers him from the St. Louis Rams.
This is the first time the game will be played on a Thursday night preceding the ceremonies. This will give the Cowboys five exhibition games before the 2017 season commences instead of the usual four.
The Cowboys have participated in five previous Hall of Fame Games, the last time was in 2013 when Larry Allen was inducted.
