Jerry Jones, Stephen Jones and Jason Garrett addressed the media at Oxnard
The news today from the press conference at Dallas Cowboys training camp in Oxnard.
Dez Bryant, Orlando Scandrick, and Sean Lee were all cleared for training camp. They are recovered enough from injuries and surgeries to participate in training camp.
Darren McFadden and Jaylon Smith were both placed on the NFI list.
Lance Dunbar, Maliek Collins, Benson Mayowa, and James Hanna were all placed on the PUP list. Hanna's situation is new, came to camp with a knee issue.
Stephen Jones basically addressed the "culture" question about suspended players every year. Jones said these are all individual cases and you can't brush the culture with broad strokes. Mentioned there are many high character players. Jason Garrett thinks that the culture is a strength of the team. Mentioned a string of players with high character and said that that is the foundation of the team. Said sometimes you take risks to fit them in, sometimes you have success, sometimes you don't. Always a work in progress. He did say that "we'll move on" from some players (Rolando McClain?)
Rolando McClain and Randy Gregory both on reserve/did not report. Won't comment any further on the two. Charles Brown also on reserve/retired opening up three roster spots.
Damien Wilson was hit in the eye by a paint ball recently and will start camp on the NFI list. He is at camp but will not be able to participate for a few weeks.
Jason Garrett: (Asked about where the sacks will come from.) Growth and development of young players and guys brought in, plus Rod Marinelli and Leon Lett will help to make sacks happen. Healthy competition and battling a great offensive line will also help to develop players. Some guys don't have experience but in right environment they will grow.
S Jones: (On running back depth) We've put together one of the better offensive teams with depth that we've had. When we built the team, the first thing that comes up is the offensive line. That carried the day in offseason strategy in putting together a championship team. Great depth at running back, never hurts to have an extra player at a position.
J Jones: (On the Ezekiel Elliott allegations) We heard from his family and reps immediately, basically referenced his character, his background. Those things you take comfort in. Let's see what the situation is and we're still doing that. Most important thing we heard details quickly and we know how things work with NFL, they are investigating in addition to law enforcement investigation, wait and see. (Asked about text messages) We've seen no contradictions that would keep him from camp.
J Jones: (On suspensions and how it affected player acquisition) We knew ahead of time about possible suspensions, we had awareness of facts to backstop positions in terms of suspensions. In light of that we drafted and added free agents with that knowledge.
Garrett: Confident on backup QBs, we brought Kellen Moore in and he has done a good job getting acclimated and played a little last year. Drafted Prescott, really good job of understanding what we want from our quarterbacks and learning the system. Showers as well. Excited about competition. We're going to develop Dak and we're giving Showers a shot at a QB spot. We're excited about Kellen will give him an opportunity.
J. Jones: (On Nick Foles) Foles isn't an option. We need to develop our own players.
