One for the thumb? How 'bout two for the thumb.
It's not quite the run of hamstring issues the Cowboys had over the last few years, but thumbs were in danger during the Cowboys game Sunday night. Defensive backups Jeff Heath and Jack Crawford both fractured their thumbs and needed surgery. While not season-ending, expect both to miss some time.
Heath is an important figure on special teams in addition to being the third guy in the safety rotation. He's one of the unsung guys who have helped this team to get to 8-3. His eight tackles on special teams is second on the team. Crawford had a big game against the Jaguars once he shifted inside and he was playing in that rotation regularly on Sunday night. Crawford's playing time in the defense was likely coming to end soon unless there is an injury along the defensive line. At some point, and it may be Thursday, Josh Brent is going to be active. He will rotate with Nick Hayden and the Cowboys will be going with their eight-man rotation that likely wouldn't include Crawford. But they obviously liked his play inside more than they did Terrell McClain, who has totally fallen out of the rotation.
Cornerback Tyler Patmon is still out, and with the loss of Heath, the Cowboys secondary is looking very thin. Pray for the good health of the top five guys. Patmon's absence means we'll likely see Jakar Hamilton on the active roster for the first time this year. Also missing was linebacker Dekoda Watson.
On the offensive side of the ball everything looks good. Tony Romo is not having any issues. The only minor annoyance is Terrance Williams fractured the tip of his finger (what was it with the Cowboys digits on Sunday?), but he is expected to wear a splint and not have any issue catching passes.
