Dominant win over Miami includes a few defensive performances of note
While the story for the Dallas Cowboys continues to be the dominance of Dak Prescott (the Cowboys have scored on every series in which Dak has thrown a pass), there were other performances of note during the preseason game against the Dolphins.
Tyrone Crawford played some snaps and got a sack. Jack Crawford continues to have a terrific preseason. Morris Claiborne got his hands on a couple of passes and Byron Jones separated Jarvis Landry from the ball. The Dolphin running game went for 38 yards in the first half, showing off some nice work by Anthony Hitchens in the middle. Cedric Thornton continued to make plays up the middle and Shaneill Jenkins notched another sack, this time with a strip. Jenkins also had a nice push on a double-team during the play on which Matt Moore was injured. Ryan Russell caused some pressure and Rodney Coe was disruptive. Kavon Frazier deflected a pass. Isaiah Frey made some nice stops and saved a TD from the safety position.
Something in common about all those players? They all work the defensive side of the ball.
This is some really good news for the team, whose defensive moves have come under great scrutiny this offseason. They have needed some players to step up and make plays in games. They are starting to see that, even as the defense remains depleted with depth players like Jeff Heath, Benson Mayowa, Charles Tapper, and Maliek Collins still sitting on the sideline. Once they get into the mix, we might see this defense heading even more in the right direction.
There is hope that more of these players will be available next week and hopefully a few more will step up and round out the 53-man roster with people who can play NFL football.
Who was your favorite defensive performer for Dallas against Miami?
