The Cowboys are looking under every rock for pass rush help.
It may be the worst-kept secret in the NFL: The Cowboys have issues with their pass rush. So it doesn't come as much of a surprise that the Cowboys worked out former Giants third-round pick Damontre Moore yesterday.
Moore (6-foot-5, 250 pounds) has been cut by three teams since December, first the Giants, then the Dolphins, and most recently the Raiders. Some might argue that that would make him a good candidate for the Cowboys, who haven't shied away from signing pass rushers with issues.
James Kratch of NJ.com provides some background on Moore:
Moore is not a bad guy. He's actually a good guy with a big heart, albeit one who has proven on multiple occasions he cannot carry himself like a professional football player is required to. Talent is not the problem. Inexcusable penalties, unprofessionalism, immaturity, questionable work habits - those have been the problems.
The Giants finally gave up on Moore, their enigmatic 2013 third-round pick, late last season in the aftermath of Headphonesgate. Moore was then picked up by the Miami Dolphins, who waived him after April's NFL Draft.
Moore then landed with the Raiders in May after clearing waivers. But his stint in Oakland is already over, a day after - what else? - he was involved in a scuffle at practice.
But the Cowboys might be desperate enough to roll the dice on Moore. Benson Mayowa (knee) and Maliek Collins (foot) only started practicing after spending the first part of camp on th PUP list. David Irving, the likely starter at left end, left practice with a groin injury earlier this week. Rookie Charles Tapper has struggled with a back injury. Demarcus Lawrence is suspended for the first four games, and Randy Gregory may be unavailable for the entire season as he deals with addiction issues.
The Cowboys had a third-round grade on Moore in the 2013 draft, even if he was the last name slotted in that round on the Cowboys' draft board.
The Cowboys defensive line got two sacks in their first pre-season game against the Rams, one by David Irving and another by Shaneil Jenkins, against a team not known for the quality of its offensive line. Moore would likely add some quality to the line, and the Cowboys need to decide whether the headache that invariably comes with Moore is worth it.
Because in addition to some pass rush, they're also going to get stuff like this from a guy whos been flagged an amazing 19 times in 45 NFL games, though this hit inexplicably did not draw a flag:
