The lack of healthy QBs on the roster is probably moving the Cowboys to start auditioning some.

Tony Romo is supposedly progressing well from his back surgery as noted in our New & Notes column from this morning. But, I'm sure the Cowboys want to give him all the time he'll need to fully recover. There is still plenty of time until the Cowboys reconvene for mini-camps and OTAs. Still, the only healthy quarterback on the roster right now is Kyle Orton. So over the next couple of months, through free agency and into the draft, the Cowboys will likely be looking at QBs who can take some of the reps in camps. In the draft they could grab someone they think could possibly replace Orton as the backup and/or be a guy they can groom for the future, post-Romo. All of those are possibilities.

Today, they took a look at a guy who can take reps in OTAs or camps and probably not much more. Dallas worked out Mike Kafka, a former fourth-round draft pick of the Philadelphia Eagles in 2010. Kafka actually played in four games for Philly in 2011 but hasn't been on an NFL roster during the season since 2012. He was cut by the Jaguars before the season in 2013.

The Cowboys also worked out receivers Braylon Bell and Maurice Williams. Both guys have spent time in the Arena League. All of this is likely just the Cowboys doing due diligence and it will continue over the next few months as they try to find a diamond in the rough, but more likely finding camp bodies instead.
