Dallas will add a big piece to their defense.
Josh Brent is finally back on a 53-man roster in the NFL. The Dallas Cowboys activated the defensive tackle today and cut linebacker Tim Dobbins to make room for him. Brent has been out of football since the drunk driving accident that killed teammate Jerry Brown, Jr. in December of 2012. The Cowboys might be planning to use him in their game after the bye week with the New York Giants. Jason Garrett wouldn't commit to Brent playing then, noting he still needed to get his weight down and he needed to get in better football shape, but it looks like the big defensive tackle will take the field soon.
Before his suspension and legal problems, Brent was showing promise as a disruptive tackle for Dallas. Previously he was playing the nose in the 3-4 but will likely shift to the 1-tech in the new 4-3. While the Cowboys have found a lot of success at the 3-tech spot with Tyrone Crawford and Henry Melton, the play of current 1-tech tackles has been very average. Nick Hayden is an okay guy taking up blocks in the running game, and Terrell McClain has flashed in some games only to disappear in others, but neither guy has shown the natural abilities that Brent possess. If he can get in football shape, the Cowboys defensive line should receive another boost after getting back DeMarcus Lawrence a few weeks ago.
