The Dallas Cowboys need all the help they can get along their defensive line. Defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli has always preached the importance of a good rotation. Jared Odrick could be the versatile rusher this defense could really use.
As we await the impending free agency period that begins on March 10th, the Cowboys have already been making an upgraded pass rush their biggest priority. After trading up in last year's second round to snag DeMarcus Lawrence, the Cowboys will continue to build their defense around the young pass-rusher.
Dallas has spent the last few years filling holes through free agency, then looking to the draft to pick the best players available. If the Cowboys would like to add a young but progressing player, Jared Odrick could be a really nice fit. The Cowboys may or may not look at re-signing Henry Melton. Finding a nice option to pair with Tyrone Crawford or play beside him could be a huge benefit for the Cowboys going forward.
According to Rotoworld, Odrick could have a higher market if the likes of Suh and Knighton re-sign with their prospective clubs. The Palm Beach Post believe that it's highly likely Odrick will test the market rather than work out a deal to remain in Miami.
Jared Odrick was drafted in the first-round of the 2010 Draft by the Miami Dolphins. He spent his college days at Penn State where he earned the starting defensive tackle job in his sophomore year. Odrick had a pretty good career in college. In 2008, he started 11 games and was named First-Team All-Big Ten. That year he recorded 41 tackles, 9.5 for loss, 4.5 sacks, a forced fumble and three deflected passes.
In 2009, Jared Odrick was named First-Team All-American, Big-Ten Defensive Player of the Year, Big-Ten Lineman of the Year and voted to the First-Team All Big-Ten again. He had six sacks, 41 tackles, 10 for loss and a blocked field goal.
Odrick was selected 28th overall in 2010, but broke his foot in October and missed the rest of the season. He returned in 2011 with a solid six-sack, one interception season as a 3-4 defensive end. The next season he would remain at end and record another six sacks. In 2013, Odrick was switched to defensive tackle, where he recorded another five sacks and had 28 quarterback hurries. 2014 would see his sack total drop, but he started all but one game at defensive tackle. He was ranked 19th overall by PFF, but played significantly more snaps than others ranked ahead of him.
Odrick could be one of those players that doesn't command as much money as he initially believes he deserves. 2014 was an up-and-down kind of year for him, he still received a positive 9.0 grade, but had his struggles down the stretch. Odrick was credited with 24 solo tackles and forced a negative play 19 times in 2014. It is my belief that he was overused after playing 817 snaps. If the Cowboys were to make a play for him, it could suit him better with a lighter work-load.
Odrick has all the ability to become a play-maker if used properly. With all the bigger names in front of him, Dallas may be in position to get a guy like Odrick without spending huge money. Rod Marinelli is a magic man, which might be an underrated negotiating tactic. Odrick's intensity and relentless spirit make him a very good option this offseason. Could Jared Odrick be a candidate for some "Marinelli Magic"?
