After finding himself in trouble with the law; Hill was looking at an early exit from the NFL. The Ravens picked him up in 2014 and he became a steady cog in their defense. Facing free agency again; Could Hill do the same in Dallas?
The Dallas Cowboys secondary has had their fair share of struggles over the past few seasons. One of the biggest catalysts have been the lack of a play-makers. Barry Church has been a solid player and J.J. Wilcox is still learning a position he has only been in for three years. The Cowboys lack a true, rangy, free-safety type. Will Hill could provide a spark the secondary could really use.
Hill went undrafted in 2012 but later debuted for the New York Giants. Hill's 6'1, 202 pound frame and closing speed make him a contender on any team. It's his questionable past that has landed him often seeking employment. He's failed the NFL's Drug Policy three times and was suspended for Adderal usage.
On June 2, 2014, he was waived by the Giants and later signed by Baltimore in week six. After promising that he had cleaned up his act, he earned the starting free safety position after two outings. According to PFF, Hill graded out well in 2014. Hill showed his instincts after he picked off Drew Brees in week 12 and returned the interception for 44 yards and a touchdown.
Hill only had one pass of twenty yards completed on him and defended four passes. He only gave up three touchdowns and made 36 solo tackles. Due to his past, it's highly unlikely that he will command big money. If Baltimore doesn't resign him, I'm certain he could come in and compete in Dallas.
The Cowboys have made it their modus operandi to find guys that need fresh starts. Will Hill is capable of becoming 2015's Rolando McClain. His overall 13.6 rating was impressive and he graded positive in both run and pass coverage. Hill was only thrown at 26 times in 12 games but only allowed 11 catches for a cumulative 103 yards. Opposing quarterbacks had a average passer rating of 76.3.
Nobody is saying that he is the second coming of Darren Woodson, but he certainly could be a boost to the secondary. With the lack of depth at the position, Dallas could use a guy like Hill. He's got versatility, intelligence, production and can play Special Teams. Did I also mention he's only 24 years old?
The character concerns are valid, but it worked out for the Cowboys with McClain. If Hill really is a "changed man", why not take a flyer on another bargain free agent?
