After making a few moves to churn the bottom of the 53 man roster, most notably trades for DE Edgar Jones and LB Kyle Bosworth, the Dallas Cowboys have now settled on the 8-man squad used to augment those eligible to play in the first game.
QB Alex Tanney
WR Danny Coale
WR Tim Benford
DL Jason Vega
LB Cam Lawrence
CB Micah Pellerin
The most noteworthy inclusion is that of QB Alex Tanney, who many fans feared would be snatched up by a QB-hungry team. That ended up not being the case and those who think that Tanney has a level of potential to someday make the 53 can breath a sigh of relief.
Obviously the most noteworthy absence is that of LB Brandon Magee. The team had hoped it would sneak the UDFA out of Arizona State onto the practice squad, but instead the Cleveland Browns swooped in and signed him to their 53 man roster. Magee missed the last two preseason games with a concussion, but still led the team in preseason tackles (20) and was second in stops (7). The Cowboys gave Magee a $70,000 guarantee, but since he has made the Browns 53 roster, they are no longer on the hook for that amount.
Any player on the practice squad is still free to negotiate with any NFL club. If signed, that club must compensate said player as if he's on it's active roster for at least three weeks. Last season, Dallas stashed UDFA G Ron Leary on the practice squad for the majority of the season, until a team tried to sign him late in the season. Dallas then promoted him to the big club and this year he is projected as their starting left guard. Practice squaders make $6,000 per week for the 2013 season.
