Here is our third mock draft with one interesting trade.
Draft season is perhaps the most fun we can have during the offseason. As we pour over the thousands of reports and look at the tapes of player after player, it’s just exciting to know that there will be some new, talented faces for the Cowboys in two and a half months.
By now, we all know what the Cowboys’ need and that’s a steady shot of defense. In fact, we have the owner of the team looking for a “War Daddy” and his son talking about looking high and low both via free agency and the draft to find guys at multiple positions on the defensive side to help this team make that next step.
Well, we’re here to make a Mockery of all that because surely we know how to fix this team; am I right? Without further adieu, let’s dive into Mockery III...
Pick 28: Dallas Cowboys select Sidney Jones, CB, Washington (CBS 23rd , DraftTek 34th)
At this point, the Cowboys see more value in taking a cornerback over the edge rushers that were still on the board. Jones is a sure-fire first-round talent at cornerback and it helps the Cowboys get younger and more talented at the position. With the futures of Morris Claiborne and Brandon Carr uncertain, Dallas can truly help their defense with a cornerback at 28.
Jones provides the length and physicality that coaches Joe Baker and Greg Jackson prefer. He’s a very athletic type of cornerback with fluid hips to turn and run with his man. He’s well-versed in man and zone coverage and can give the Cowboys a cornerback who can make plays on the ball.
The Atlanta Falcons call and they’re interested in Demarcus Walker. In order to move up and get him, they offer picks 63 + 135 (314.5 pts.) for pick 60 (300 pts.). This gives Dallas another fourth-round pick.
Pick 63: Dallas Cowboys select Tarell Basham, DL, Ohio (CBS 62nd, DraftTek 71st)
A repeat from last week, the Cowboys should fall in love with the type of player that Basham truly is. Basham has the initial first-step quickness that is a prerequisite for the Rod Marinelli defense but he’s also got versatility. Dallas loves to be able to move their ends around in the rotation because Marinelli wants guys that have giant motors and can play inside on passing downs.
Basham is best suited for the edge but he’s got quickness and production. He was the MAC Defensive Player of the Year with 10 sacks and 14.5 tackles for loss. The Cowboys need more talent on the edge and Basham is talented.
Pick 92: Dallas Cowboys select Derek Rivers, DE, Youngstown State (CBS 93rd, DraftTek 168th)
Just grabbing one edge rusher is not going to be enough for the Dallas Cowboys. they have needs on the defensive line but especially at edge rusher. The guys they have cannot currently be counted on as significant contributors. Forget the nonsense with Randy Gregory but both DeMarcus Lawrence and Tyrone Crawford are also coming off their second-consecutive offseason surgeries.
Dallas needs youth and guys that can produce in their roles. Rivers is explosive off the line though he could stand to put on some bulk. He’s unafraid to get his nose in there and attack. His speed to power combination is intriguing as well as his violent tendencies. He’s an aggressive player with polished pass rushing moves with tremendous bend around the edge.
Pick 132: Dallas Cowboys select Josh Reynolds, WR, Texas A&M (CBS 138th, DraftTek 124th)
The Cowboys are looking for more talent at the receiver position opposite Dez Bryant and have two guys set to be free agents. Reynolds is a hyper-productive player who found a way to stand out with poor quarterback play at the Senior Bowl. He’s got good size and soft hands.
Reynolds also shows good speed to separate from his man and the ability to find creases and get open. He’s routinely making himself the go-to guy with a ton of effort to make big plays.
Pick 135: Dallas Cowboys select Jonnu Smith, TE, Florida International (CBS 164th, DraftTek 262nd)
Behind Jason Witten, the tight end position is under construction. You have Gavin Escobar who is likely moving elsewhere in free agency, James Hanna has spent a lot of time on the injured reserve list and Geoff Swaim is in the same boat. The Cowboys do have a developmental talent in Rico Gathers but he is a converted basketball player.
Jonnu Smith has set all kinds of records at FIU in his position. He’s gone through some tough things, losing his father at a young age. He’s shown to be the full package at tight end including a season with 14 touchdowns. Smith’s 2016 season ended early when his girlfriend poured boiling hot water on him for neglecting to pay attention to her. He’s since put all of that behind him as he pushes forward to an NFL career. Like Witten, Jonnu is built tough after he playing through a torn ACL in 2015.
Pick 212: Dallas Cowboys select Al-Quadin Muhammad, DE, Miami (CBS 482nd, DraftTek—)
Muhammed is a monster prospect that is in danger of not being drafted at all due to pre-judgement. This former player was on everyone’s radar as one the top pass rushing prospects in the country. He was suspended after breaking the nose of a fellow Hurricanes’ student due to an altercation that was reported to be provoked by the other party.
Muhammed returned to play 13 games in 2015 without starting until mid-October. he was able to record 8.5 tackles for loss and paired it with five sacks. He was then let go from the program after Miami was disciplined for having some players involved with a local car dealership, nobody truly knows if he was involved at all. For a team that is hurting for pass rush help, Muhammad could be the steal of 2017. He’s got incredible speed and burst off the ball. If Rod Marinelli wants the explosion, here’s your guy. He’s going to make an NFL team very happy.
Pick 231: Dallas Cowboys select Fred Ross, WR, Mississippi State (CBS 245th, DraftTek 245th)
Ross is another hyper-productive receiver who saw his best action when he was with former Bulldog, now Cowboys’ quarterback Dak Prescott. Ross has size and can do a multitude of things for a team that needs more options. Ross has great instincts and soft hands with the abilities to keep control of his body and make contested catches. There is hope that in the right system, he has the traits to become an NFL standout.
Pick 249: Dallas Cowboys select Montae Nicholson, SS, Michigan State (CBS 276th, DraftTek 134th)
Nicholson played in 38 career games at Michigan State and he was very productive with 200 tackles and four interceptions. If Nicholson would have stayed one more year, he would be in the top five of safety prospects but he declared early because he’s anxious to start his career. Nicholson could very well cruise up the charts with a standout performance at the Combine.
Nicholson has great awareness and can really offer his support to stop the run. He’s also no stranger to making plays. Nicholson has a tremendous amount of upside and gives every ounce of effort to make himself a presence in the secondary.
Now it’s your turn. Do you like this mock draft? If not, give us your critique and let us know where you’d make some changes.
