Mockery V is here now that the Combine results are in, Cowboys have made moves in Free Agency, a few changes have occurred.
Before we saturated the blogosphere with another mock draft, we decided to wait until the Combine and the beginning of free agency was complete. There are a few things to take away from the Combine, most importantly, not a lot has changed. Myles Garrett is perhaps the easiest first pick we've seen since Andrew Luck was picked by the Colts.
After Garrett, the edge rushers are all very similar and many of them need to improve on the same things. Another takeaway has got to be how deep the draft is at defensive back. There will be guys that could normally go in the second round being pushed further down and that bodes well for the Cowboys.
So, let the Mockery V begin and let's stay away from the trades. It's important to know that this year is shaping up to many draftniks' as a year, in which, we likely won't see many trades, especially in the first round.
Pick 28: Cowboys select Charles Harris, DE, Missouri (CBS 32nd, DraftTek 31st)
It's unfortunate that a lot of pass rushers didn't put up great numbers in the three-cone but some scouts have said that it has a lot to do with how they're asked to do it. Either way, pass rusher will be the prize position in the first round and the Cowboys need one.
Some folks get caught up in Harris is a 3-4 outside linebacker but the Cowboys aren't afraid to snag a guy that can rush the passer. Harris is quick-twitched and knows how to manipulate his body to win against the blockers in the NFL. Harris came in at 253 lbs which is far better than the 230's he was rumored to be. Harris is a high-intensity, high-motor, high-character guy. Perfect fit for the Cowboys and what they value.
Pick 60: Cowboys select Josh Jones, SS, NC State (CBS 60th, DraftTek 132nd)
Dallas wants you to believe that they have all the confidence in the world in Jeff Heath. The truth is that he’s really improved over his time in Dallas but the more he’s exposed, the more of a liability he becomes. Dallas needs to open up the battlefield at strong safety.
Though Kavon Frazier will get a stab at it, safety is a need with the Cowboys losing their starter, Barry Church, and his backup, J.J. Wilcox. Jones is a smart football player who is a willing tackler and a guy that can lay the wood when necessary. He’s got great instincts and the closer he is to the ball, the better the defense will be.
Pick 92: Cowboys select Rasul Douglas, CB, West Virginia (CBS 91st, DraftTek 80th)
Dallas covered themselves with the signing of Nolan Carroll but they will still be looking for a capable cornerback to eventually start. They seem willing to let both Morris Claiborne and Brandon Carr find different homes in 2017. That’s just fine because they likely want to get younger, more durable, and better at the position.
Douglas is one of those good cornerbacks in an over-saturated market that could help the Cowboys immediately. He’s got a good combination of size and speed, he’s fluid and athletic. He’s got some range, he tackles well and can play zone or man and make plays. The best part about him is that he has a “my ball” attitude, something the Cowboys have lacked for some time.
Pick 133: Cowboys select Julie’n Davenport, OT, Bucknell (CBS 147th, DraftTek—)
Dallas has a plan in place to offset the loss of the newly retired Doug Free. They drafted Chaz Green two seasons ago and have La’el Collins that could move outside, though they want him at guard. Dallas values the offensive line more than any team in the NFL, they will address the position at some point.
Davenport has been a riser in a weak tackle class that deserves a look as a potential right tackle. He’s got size and strength with solid footwork that should translate well at the NFL level. He could be one of those guys that are gone earlier than expected but he’s a bit raw. He was a two-year captain and started 44 games in college dominating the competition, he’ll have to show he can play with the big boys.
Pick 211: Cowboys select Al-Quadin Muhammad, DE, Miami (CBS 482nd, DraftTek--)
Here's another repeat pick for a player that could be a hidden gem in this year's class. He was at one time one of the most highly sought after prospects for colleges all across the country. A few mishaps, including a knockout punch to a guy after practice and some unknown affiliation with a car dealership.
He is an explosive athlete on the field.. He stood out at Miami whenever he was given a chance to play. Someone is going to end up with a productive player and the Cowboys could be a quality home.
Pick 228: Cowboys select Javancy Jones, OLB, Jackson State (CBS 226th, DraftTek--)
Jones had offers to play in a lot of places but chose to stay close to home to his mother's ailment with Devic's disease. He was named an All-American and led his team with 82 tackles, including 19.5 for loss. He's an all-effort and highly productive player with a good build and knowledge for the game. He stood out in the East-West Shrine game, showing that he can compete at a high level.
Pick 246: Cowboys select Fred Ross, WR, Mississippi State (CBS 344th, DraftTek 162nd)
Dallas wasn’t expected to be able to keep Terrance Williams opposite Dez Bryant and re-sign Brice Butler. They signed Butler then Williams turned down other offers to remain a Cowboy, keeping the offense mostly intact for Dak Prescott.
Speaking of Prescott, Ross was one of his favorite targets for the Bulldogs and he was super productive. Ross has size and solid hands, he needs to learn to be a better route runner but he subscribes to the Cole Beasley model, just get open. Ross could be a solid option that turns into something much better at a later date.
