The latest from the busiest day in one of the slowest periods in the NFL news cycle.

Cowboys win toss with Ravens, will pick 16th in first round - Blogging the Boys

Yesterday's big news: The Cowboys now know where they'll be picking in the second week of May. And of course, BTB was on the scene like superheroes. Not only did Dave pen the above article, but KD followed it up with some analysis of the ramifications of Dallas first win in 2014.

Mayock Speaks!!!

The transcript of NFL Network draft guru geek extraordinaire Mike Mayock's annual pre-Combine conference call was released yesterday to big fanfare (whew! what a news day). As per usual, BTB was on the scene, with summaries of his insights on the Cowboys' seeming positions of greatest need: defensive linemen and safeties. Go here to download the entire conversation. And speaking of safeties...

Bob Sturm looks at the safety class - Live from Lewisville

In Episode Five of his 2014 draft series, the Sturminator evaluates the crop of collegiate safeties. Before putting on his draft nerd's cap, he asks:

Could you imagine having a decade long of quality play from a center-field free safety? Maybe not Earl Thomas quality, but at least having some decent over-the-top play that can help the secondary? It has been a long time around here.

It sure has. The Darren Woodson days seem like a beautiful dream from which I have awakened, to the sound of nails on chalkboards and colicky babies.

Who does Sturm like? The usual guys, with a dose of unexpected love for the diminutive Seminole, Lamarcus Joyner.

Defensive move to 4-3 Made Cowboys Pass on Floyd - Rowan Kavner, The Mothership

Another chapter in the never-ending saga that rivals the Game of Thrones books for its sheer volume and utter bloodthirstiness, this one brought about by a Stephen Jones pre-Combine interview, in which Jones the Younger explains that the Sharrif Floyd "debacle" was a residual aftereffect of the defensive scheme shift. The real news? He promises that it won't happen again.

What should the Cowboys do with Carr?

Cowboys have call to make on Ware - Todd Archer, ESPN Dallas

Apparently, Todd Archer worked from the "salary cap/ contracts" section of his little reporter's notebook yesterday. Both pieces look at the team's options should they try to recalibrate these and other players' contracts more closely to their performance. I don't really care how they do it, so long as they do it.

Cowboys need defense with No. 16 - Calvin Watkins, ESPN Dallas

Well, yeah. Unless they need offense.

A few names to watch at the NFL combine - Bryan Broaddus, The Mothership

The Broad One offers up a few names of player groupings upon whom we should cast our ever-lovin' eyes as they run around in their underwear in Indy. Those who merit special attention are Offensive Line Group 2 (Taylor Lewan, Zach Martin, Jake Matthews, Moses Morgan, Greg Robinson, Cyril Richardson, Xavier Su'A-Filo and David Yankey), WR Group 5 (Marqise Lee, Allen Robinson and Sammy Watkins) and DL Group 7 (Jadeveon Clowney, Aaron Donald, Kony Ealy, Dominique Easley, Ra'Shede Hageman, Timmy Jernigan and Dee Ford).

Speaking of the Combine, I'd like to direct your attention to some pieces BTB published last year that carefully outline the skills tests (which everybody participates in) and the position-specific drills. As you gear up to watch all 2,642 consecutive hours of Combine coverage, these should help to frame what you're watching:

A Closer Look At The Skills Tests

The Position-Specific Drills For Offensive Players

The Position-Specific Drills For Defensive Players

Enjoy the Combine, y'all!!
