The ongoing investigation of Rolando McClain's home has been declared inactive. What does that mean for McClain and his negotiation with the Dallas Cowboys?
In December of 2014, Rolando McClain's home in Tuscaloosa, Alabama burned to the ground. Last month, Fire Marshall Ed Paulk declared that the fire was an arson. The home to that point had been listed for sale at a value of $1.5 million but was mysteriously set ablaze.
After exhausting all options, Paulk's office has now stated that the case will remain open but at this point will be inactive until further evidence could be brought forth. All leads have been unsuccessful at this point.
On January 2nd, McClain spoke and said "it was tough losing his home." He was asked if he's heard anything new regarding the fire to which he replied "it's the media's job to speculate, not mine. Last I heard it was nothing, I'm not going to say anything until I know something."
Paulk said there is no statute of limitations with arson in the state of Alabama, therefore the case will remain open until it is solved. At this point though there will be no further pursuit for the time being.
Rolando McClain has remained in the Dallas area since the end of the 2014 season and has been seen at Valley Ranch working out. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones spoke last week at the owner's meeting about McClain's status with the team. He stated the club is currently in negotiations with the twice-retired linebacker but things are rather preliminary at this point.
So far his value on the open market has been non-existent. Dallas seems to be the only team to have any interest in his services for 2015. McClain has been an enigmatic character since he's been in the NFL, but has all the tools and abilities to fulfill his first-round draft status. With the impending hearing on his April 2013 disorderly conduct and resisting arrest charge, the Cowboys have not felt any pressure to extend McClain's tenure just yet.
There has been a lot of talk of a divorce between the Cowboys and McClain but Stephen Jones and company refute any of those reports. Free agency is a long-lasting period of time and belief within is that McClain's future could be ironed out once his personal life is. With the draft on the horizon and training camp a-ways away, all the leverage remains with the Dallas Cowboys.
