The Twitterverse lit up momentarily with reports that DeMarcus Ware was being cut, but it turned out to be a misunderstanding. His status is still the same as it ever was, an unknown. Plus draft and free agency news.

A prediction by a writer quickly escalated into a Twitter firestorm on Wednesday with reports that the Dallas Cowboys were going to cut DeMarcus Ware. The rumor was quickly squelched. Whatever happens with Ware, it's not happening today.

Cutting DeMarcus Ware 1 Of 4 Cowboys Options - Mike Fisher, CBS Dallas / Fort Worth
Mike Fisher went on the radio and also put up a quick article to clarify the choices facing the Cowboys.

Jerry Jones historically has a difficult time making an emotional and financial break from his Dallas Cowboys stars. But sources tell me that DeMarcus Ware's future in Dallas can be boiled down to a hard-but-true catchphrase:

"Pay cut or be cut.''

"I look at that,'' said Jones, who certainly won't phrase his position that harshly but conceded he is weighing every option, even with a future Hall-of-Fame pass-rusher. "Those are things you have to look at."

Fisher makes the argument that restructuring doesn't help enough and doesn't address the issue of whether Ware is still a value to the team.

NFL Combine Tale Of The Tape: Defensive Tackles Jerry Jones Elaborates On Not Extending Garrett

If Released by Dallas Cowboys, Could DeMarcus Ware Become a Possibility for New York Giants? | Giants 101 | Sports Media 101
The rumors immediately sparked interest in some quarters about what teams might be in play to sign a Ware who no longer played in Dallas. The New York Giants, who have certainly seen a great deal of him over the years, were one possibility.

Right now, like Graziano mentioned in the story on ESPN, it's tough to imagine Jones parting ways with such a popular figure and a future Hall of Famer in Ware, but in the NFL of 2014, not every player gets to finish his career with the team they started with; Peyton Manning can certainly attest to that notion. But if Ware gets cut loose and is a free agent, it wouldn't be the craziest idea in the world for the Giants to explore the possibility of looking to add a top pass rusher like Ware, especially if Tuck bolts the team.

Higher hopes for Cowboys' Tyrone Crawford - Todd Archer, ESPN Dallas
One player that will be called on to help pick up the slack if Ware is gone, or even if he stays, is Tyrone Crawford, who went down the first day of training camp in 2013 and missed the entire season. The team is hoping for a much better year from him.

"The good thing about Crawford is that he's versatile," executive vice president Stephen Jones said. "I think he could be an under tackle. I think he could be a left end. That was unfortunately a tough one that we lost. We thought he was going to be player No. 5 for us that could be versatile and play a lot of snaps."

Bob's Blog - Live from Lewisville: 2014 Cowboys Draft Weekly Notebook - Episode 6 - Defensive Ends
Oh, and coincidentally, Bob Sturm takes a look at DE candidates in the draft who are possibly going to be options when Dallas picks in the early rounds. And he does not just look at how the players performed in college or what their measurables were at the Combine, he tries to figure as best he can how they would or would not fit in the Marinelli/Kiffen defense. It is worth the read just to get smarter about how to look at possible draft picks, but I'll give you the punch line.

So, in closing, Dee Ford, Jackson Jeffcoat, and Trent Murphy are not scheme fits.

Stephon Tuitt is not ideal, but worth the trouble.

And, Kony Ealy, Scott Crichton, and Chris Smith are perfect fits for what you want to build.

Scout's Eye: A Few Surprises Among The Combine DB's - Bryan Broaddus, DallasCowboys.com
Broaddus is looking at the back of the defense, and as usual, he uncovers some possible later round/UDFA options. He finds one guy that doesn't have size, but has speed to burn.

One of the best cornerbacks that I had seen on tape pre-Combine ran one of the best 40 times for the group. Local product, TCU's Jason Verrett, is barely 5-9 in height but when you study him, he plays far bigger than that.

Here is a guy that Oklahoma State tried to pick on during their game this season and he just kept battling all day. He is one of those players that plays to his 4.38 speed.

What was even more impressive about him and Bradley Roby was they both ran a 1.47 for the 10. Verrett also managed to vertical jump 39" and broad jump 10'8". When you watched him go through drills, there is no wasted motion or false steps, it's all about explosive quickness.

Henry Melton would have interest in Dallas Cowboys - Todd Archer, ESPN Dallas
Dallas still needs some help at defensive tackle, too, and there is interest (at least among the fan base) in Chicago Bears free agent Henry Melton, and it looks like he is interested in the idea, too. He is coming off injury, so that would mean some questions would have to be answered, but that may also put him down in the price range that the Cowboys will have to stick to.

There is a "but" here -- Melton's health. He is recovering from a torn anterior cruciate ligament suffered in the third game of the season.

"Henry's from Dallas, he played for [Marinelli], obviously there would be interest from Henry's side, but who knows at this point?" Melton's agent, Jordan Woy, said.

Young Cowboys left tackle Tyron Smith will cash in big time - Todd Archer, ESPN Dallas
One position that Dallas is not worried about is offensive left tackle. Tyron Smith may hold that job for the next decade or more, and is in line for a big payday soon.

Smith does not turn 24 until Dec. 12. He is coming off his first Pro Bowl appearance. He had his best season. He has fully acclimated to the left tackle spot after playing right tackle as a rookie in 2011. It is rare to find a player of Smith's age and ability who is closing in on free agency. He was 20 when the Cowboys picked him ninth overall.
