2014 Cowboys Draft Notebook Weekly, Episode #1 - Bob Sturm
Sturm officially kicks off draft season with the first in what he promises will be weekly ruminations on the draft. In this post, Sturm posits three over-riding priorities for the Cowboys in 2014, the last of which is this:
The list of pressing, immediate needs is manageable, but the list of general needs is quite long.
Here is the overall theme of Cowboys football in the 7 seasons since Parcells. They have a pretty strong and suitable roster from 1-20. They are not bad in a lot of spots and presently, if the season started in April, you have a feeling that you would be ok at just about every starting position but Defensive Tackle, Defensive End, and Safety. You might like another LB who can start and I am not willing to say that Ron Leary is my left guard or Mackenzy Bernadeau is my right guard if I have a better idea, but for now, they are not horrible. But, from 21-53 on the roster, the issues are still not where they need to be.
Witten, Smith Named To USA Football All-Fundamentals Team - David Helman, DallasCowboys.com
More post-season accolades for the Cowboys. This award honors NFL players who exhibit exemplary football techniques for youth football players to emulate. Jason Witten and Tyron Smith get the well-deserved nod.
Is Henry Melton in the Cowboys' future? - Cavin Watkins, ESPN Dallas
An ACL injury and a recent arrest say probably not, but Watkins brushes those aside as issues that will only serve to lower Melton's price.
The Cowboys: Contributions, Contracts and The Cap - Mike Fisher, FOX Sports
Mike Fisher is in fine form as he summarizes the Cowboys' issues at linebacker:
Fix Lee from the neck down and fix Carter from the neck up, and the Cowboys have a potentially outstanding linebacking corps.
Position Series: Younger Interior O-Line Pays Off - Rowan Kavner, DallasCowboys.com
Kavner writes that Travis Frederick was a major reason fo the turnaround the Cowboys saw with their O-line:
The additions of Frederick and Leary helped the interior reshape the production of the entire line. Then after Waters got hurt, Bernadeau stepped in seamlessly. The youth of Leary and Frederick should garner excitement for the future.
Former Cowboys Assistant To Get Vikings’ Head Coach Job - Nick Eatman, DallasCowboys.com
Mike Zimmer was a Cowboys’ assistant coach for 13 years from 1994-2006, and n ow finally gets a shot at a head coaching gig in the NFL.
Mike Zimmer now becomes the 5th @dallascowboys defensive coordinator to take a head coaching job. Dallas has only had 9 DC's in team history

Cowboys didn't run Mike Zimmer out - Todd Archer, ESPN Dallas
Archer valiantly tries to dispell two popular memes at the same time: One, the Cowboys ran Zimmer out of Dallas. Two, the Cowboys never should have let Sean Payton leave for New Orleans. Of course, the people who most need to read this stopped reading after the first few words of the headline.
Clemson DE Beasley to stay in school - San Antonio Express-News
The 6-foot-2, 235-pound Beasley may not have been a target for the Cowboys, but it is one less prospect at the top of the draft to fill the demand for pass rushers.
Thanks pops for bringing my son into the world healthy. Words can't explain how I feel right now.
