Latest Cowboys headlines: DeVonte Holloman is back at practice; AT&T Stadium sets concert attendance record; Dallas Cowboys' cap space not what you think.
Broaddus: Odds & Ends To Watch For In Week 3 OTAs - DallasCowboys.com
In addition to writing about a handful of players who've been missing due to various heath and other issues (Terrance Mitchell, Ben Gardner, Caesar Rayford, Amobi Okoye), Broaddus sounds excited to have DeVonte Holloman back at practice:
The staff is hopeful that this will be the first week that DeVonte Holloman will get to practice since missing previous practices with a sore hamstring. While he has been out Justin Durant, Anthony Hitchens, Dontavis Sapp and Orie Lemon have been filling in. I believe that this is Holloman’s job to lose once he gets back into the mix. He is just too talented and has the instincts to be the best option to replace Sean Lee. The staff has been very cautious with his injury for the reason that they do not want it to carry over to training camp.
Okoye Excited To Rejoin His "Master Splinter" Marinelli - Rowan Kavner, DallasCowboys.com
Kavner writes that Okoye calls defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli "Master Splinter" – the omniscient rat master guru in the "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" series.
"I call him Master Splinter, because he is Master Splinter," Okoye said. "He’s a heck of a teacher, makes you become a student of the game and a master of your craft."
"He’s by far the best position coach I’ve had and defensive coordinator I’ve had since I’ve been in the pros," Okoye said.
Scout's Eye: Some Personnel Notes From Practice - Bryan Broaddus, DallasCowboys.com
Yesterday's OTA session was closed to the public, but Broaddus manages to piece together an OTA summary from "talking to folks that had access to practice." Notable development: Scandrick and Claiborne seem to be the starters over Carr:
Scandrick has been the starter at right corner and when they go to the nickel, he slides inside to handle the slot. But when Claiborne comes onto the field in base situations, it has been Scandrick that has moved over to the left corner for Carr.
Dallas Cowboys Travis Frederick, Terrance Williams ready to break out? - Todd Archer, ESPN Dallas
Archer picks up a Pete Prisco article from last week in which Prisco calls Travis Frederick and Terrance Williams breakout candidates for 2014. As Archer discusses Williams, he offers this take on how the estimated 375 pass completions in 2014 could be distributed:
- Pencil in Bryant for another 90-plus catch season.
- Jason Witten will catch 75-80 passes.
- The running backs will combine for 80.
- Cole Beasley should figure in that 35-45 catch range.
- Dwayne Harris and Gavin Escobar will have more than the 18 they combined for last year.
- Devin Street will be in that 20-30 range if things go well as well.
Not sure how much that leaves for Williams exactly, but Archer thinks there'll be enough opportunities left for Williams.
AT&T Stadium sets concert attendance record - Todd Archer, ESPN Dallas
Nearly 105,000 concert-goers were at AT&T Stadium over the weekend for George Strait's final concert. Todd Archer writes that It was "the most attended [indoor] concert ever in North America." The attendance easily surpassed the previous record set by the Rolling Stones at the Superdome in 1981 with a crowd of 87,500.
Dallas Cowboys' cap space not what you think - Todd Archer, ESPN Dallas
The Cowboys had $10,799,806 million in cap space as of June 2, meaning only 10 teams had more. But that doesn't mean the Cowboys should "get carried away with that figure," Archer writes, and counts off the bills that may come due soon:
- Signings Zack Martin and DeMarcus Lawrence: $1.6 million
- Cap hit of full roster instead of current "Rule of 51" cost: $1.0 million
- Signing an eight-man practice squad: $1.0 million
- Per game roster bonuses for Melton and Spencer: max $2.0 million, probably a lot less
- Reserve for injury settlements for players hurt during camp: tbd
- Emergency reserve to add players during the season: $2-3 million
The Cowboys also want to extend Tyron Smith and Dez Bryant, but depending on how those contracts are structured, those signings could actually create cap space. In the end, Archer argues, the Cowboys may not have more than $2-3 million of cap space when all is said and done. Of course, most of the 20+ teams with less current cap space than the Cowboys face a very similar list of coming cap charges. The difference is that most of those teams have to create the space to accommodate those charges, the Cowboys don't.

Cowboys "Front Seven" Ranked Worst In NFL; Is There Any Hope They Will Improve? - Blogging The Boys
Last week, Mike Tanier, formerly of Football Outsiders, wrote about the Cowboys O-line and had them ranked at the top of his 2014 list. Well, when you flip it around and look at the Cowboys from a defensive front seven perspective, things all of a sudden get ugly. Tanier came out with an article ranking the top defensive front sevens, and in direct contrast with the offensive line, he ranks the Cowboys dead last.

Former Cowboys lineman arrested for selling pain-killers | ProFootballTalk
I have no working memory of Gennaro DiNapoli, so I looked him up. Turns out, he started nine games for Oakland in 1999, 18 games for Tennessee in 2001-02, and zero games for the Cowboys in 2003. Notice how the headline not only calls the guy a former Cowboy (which is technically true, but misrepresents his NFL career) but also omits his little-known name from the headline? Classic bait-and-switch.
