Latest Cowboys headlines: Scouting report says Rolando McClain plays with power; Cowboys opener set to be priciest opening game in three years; Is a tight end next on the Cowboys shopping list?
Dallas Cowboys keep filling holes; one more left? - Todd Archer, ESPN Dallas
The Cowboys added two veterans since the end of OTAs and minicamp in guard Uche Nwaneri and linebacker Rolando McClain. Archer wonders if a tight end is next on the agenda.
Why tight end?
They have a need for a blocker behind Jason Witten. That’s not Gavin Escobar’s forte. James Hanna is willing but that’s not his strength either. Jordan Najvar is an undrafted free agent. There aren’t many current candidates available to fit the bill in price or job description, but the Cowboys could spend time in training camp looking at other rosters for help.
Scouting Report: New LB McClain Plays With Power - Bryan Broaddus, DC.com
Broaddus studied three of McClain's games from 2012, and summarizes his impressions in a scouting report that you'll want to read. Broaddus concludes:
The big question will be if McClain is mentally right, because his tape shows that he has the physical tools with the low age to be a very big help. On a one year deal, it’s up to McClain to prove that he wants to play and get his career back on track. From my experiences in this league, these are the best case situations because if it doesn’t work out, you just move on. But if it does, you really have a chance to help your club.
Ravens may not get sixth-round pick after all - Baltimoresun.com
The Baltimore Sun clarifies who's getting what, and under what conditions, in this deal.
It was widely reported after the deal that the Ravens would send McClain, who was on the reserved/retired list, plus a 2015 seventh-round pick to the Cowboys for a 2015 sixth-round pick.
However, that’s the best-case scenario. The Cowboys announced the terms of the deal today and that 2015 draft pick exchange will only take place if McClain plays 50 percent of the defensive snaps for Dallas during the 2014 season.
If McClain doesn’t play in 50 percent of the Cowboys’ defensive snaps but is on their 53-man roster for five games or the gameday 46-man roster for three, the Cowboys and Ravens will swap 2016 seventh-round picks only if Dallas has the better pick.
Cowboys place LB Sean Lee on IR, officially out for 2014 season - CBSSports.com
In case you were not aware: When the Cowboys placed Sean Lee on injured reserve, any chance of Lee making a comeback in 2014 disappeared.
Position Battle: Hayden Should Get Tested By McClain, Others - Bryan Broaddus, DC.com
Broaddus turns his attention to the battle at the defensive tackle spot, where last year's starter Nick Hayden will face some competition.
This past offseason has brought options with the additions of Terrell McClain and Ken Bishop but also the return of Tyrone Crawford after missing the entire season. McClain lined up at the three during OTAs and minicamps for Henry Melton, who will be ready for training camp but I think the better fit for him is at that spot which currently belongs to Hayden. His best trait is his quickness on the move but also his strength to shed blockers. Crawford also got work there during the spring when the defense went to their nickel package. In just watching all these players take snaps, McClain is the one that appears to have the most to work with for the position where with Hayden, they are limited in what they can really do.
Free Embraces Role as Elder Statesman | Scott Crisp, NBC 5 DFW
At 30, right tackle Doug Free is the elder statesman of the Cowboys' young offensive line, and it's a role he embraces.
"Part of my role is just experience, knowledge, as long as I’ve been here, just try to help them with the little things here and there, what to do here, what to do there," Free told David Helman of DallasCowboys.com. "They’re all great football players so they know the football things, but there’s little things that you don’t learn your first year or first two years, that you learn further on. So I just try to help them along as much as I can to help them keep building and be as strong as they can."
Dallas Cowboys And San Francisco 49ers Set For Priciest Opening Game In 3 Years - Forbes.com
According to Razorgator, tickets to the Cowboys' season opener versus the 49ers are going for an average price of $404.50.
This is also only the third time since 2009 that the average price for tickets has exceeded $400 for the opening game of the season. The previous two times tickets have garnered an average this high both came in the defending Super Bowl Champions home opener: 2010 when the defending champion Saints faced off against the Vikings (an average ticket price of $553) and in 2012 when the New York Giants played the Dallas Cowboys (an average ticket price of $483.)
