Latest Cowboys headlines: Sean Payton expects Dak Prescott to continue to progress; Cowboys to Play in HoF game; free agency begins at the Combine.

Sean Payton doesn't see a sophomore jinx in Dak Prescott's future - Jean-Jacques Taylor, ESPN

Unlike fellow former NFC East newcomers at the quarterback position, Sean Payton expects Dak Prescott to continue to progress in his second year in the league. Unlike his predecessors, Prescott was able to work within the team’s established philosophy rather than having an offense tailored around one aspect of his game.

“I’m not even talking or discussing sophomore slumps. I’m looking at cutups and looking at improving and inserting some new thoughts and ideas.

“You shake his hand and you feel like he’s a guy who’s hard to get off his spot and that’s going to serve him well throughout his career.” - Sean Payton on Dak Prescott

Garrett’s Success Comes Through His Consistent Commitment to ‘The Team’ - Jeff Sullivan, DallasCowboys.com

Sully gives us an insightful look inside the mind of the man who holds everything together for the Dallas Cowboys; the longer you read into this one the more you really understand how Jason makes things work inside the locker room.

For Garrett, it’s really about a way of life. This isn’t just about how he coaches a football team. It’s how he was brought up, and it’s how he has spent a lifetime trying to take the best from all of those he encounters. This is the Garrett Way.

2017 NFL draft rankings: Top prospects by position - Chris Burke, Sports Illustrated

SI breaks down the nation’s top draft prospects in a position by position analysis. Need a linebacker? There’s a list for that. Wide receiver? That’s covered too.

Of course, this rankings will continue to fluctuate as we progress through the underwear olympics and as teams conduct individual workouts with players, but this does give us another bit of intelligence to build a baseline from.

Five Big Questions For The Cowboys To Answer At The Combine - David Helman, DallasCowboys.com

Since I brought up the next big event on the road to the NFL Draft, let's take a look at what is going to be on the Cowboys minds as they arrive in Indianapolis. It is not just about evaluating talent, there will be a lot of business done behind closed doors as owners, general managers, and other high level types set down face to face.

I wrote a few weeks back about the price of the Cowboys’ impending free agents. As the NFL Combine begins, though, I would imagine those estimates are about to become a bit more concrete.

Like I said, every agent of consequence is going to be testing the waters and feeling out the market next week. It’s a great opportunity to foster relationships and feel out the market while the entire league is in one place.

The Cowboys likely already have numbers in mind for all of their impending free agents – how much they’re willing to pay, how much they expect the price to be. This is a great chance to bounce those numbers off of other people.

Free agency is set to start a mere three days after the Combine ends this year. Whatever questions the Cowboys have about their blueprint for the coming month, they’re about to get them answered.

If not Jason Pierre-Paul, what about Nick Perry for Cowboys? - Todd Archer, ESPN

Building a pass rush should be near the top of the Cowboys off season list, and it is popular to link JPP to the Cowboys. It is a case of need and ability meeting. Throw in the chance to take a good piece away from a division foe and you have a really attractive scenario, Pierre-Paul is not the only game in town.

Perry could be a good fit for the Cowboys. He appears to be a hard worker, which is a must under Rod Marinelli. He also ranked 10th among edge defenders against the run, according to PFF. That’s a must for Marinelli, too.

Perry had 11 sacks last season for the Green Bay Packers, and he brings the hard working attitude that the team likes in their players. He will not be cheap, but if Dallas is willing to invest, Perry might be the return on investment they are looking for.

Seven Things You Need To Know About Cowboys' Mysterious Draft Guru Will McClay OCC, Blogging The Boys

Will McClay may well be the Cowboys ‘Most Valuable Player’. His hard work throughout the year has been the unseen force that has helped Jason Garrett and his charges rise from mediocrity to relevance in recent seasons.

No stranger to hard work himself, our own OCC did some deep digging to put together a look at what makes McClay the asset that he has proven to be. Contrary to the popular opinion held by the casual observer, those in the know realize that McClay, along with Garrett, is the man who built the current edition of the Dallas Cowboys.

Will McClay is the defacto GM in Dallas in everything but the title; everybody around the league knows it and recognizes it.

Cowboys training camp could move up after HOF Game announcement - Patrik Walker,CBS Sports

With the announcement that the Dallas Cowboys and Arizona Cardinals would meet in the Hall of Fame Game comes the realization that Cowboys football will be back one week earlier than was previously anticipated. That also means that the two teams will likely open training camp a little earlier as well, probably around July 20th.

After several months without football, that is always a bit of welcome news.

Original Cowboys Beat Writer Gary Cartwright Dies At Age 82 - Sam Blair, DallasCowboys.com

Those of us who write about the Cowboys follow in the footsteps of men like Gary Cartwright, who covered the team for the Dallas Times Herald and the Dallas Morning News. Cartwright was one of the original four beat writers who followed the team from its inception.

Gary Cartwright was not a ‘homer’, and he ruffled more than a few feathers during his time on the Cowboys beat. No punches were pulled, and in doing so he set the tone for the way that some writers still cover the team today.

Thank you for your efforts, Mr, Cartwright. We will carry your legacy forward.
