Did the Dallas Cowboys improve in the area of quarterback from last season until now?
Over the course of the next few weeks, I will take a page out of our friends over at Pride of Detroit's book and pose questions to the readers about Cowboys improvements at specific positions.
The quarterback position for any team is the most important to figure out. The Cowboys are fortunate enough to have one that is coming off an MVP-like performance and has been a high-level player for some time. However what about the rest of the QB depth chart?
QB1- Tony Romo
As said previously, Romo is coming of a phenomenal year and best of his career in my eyes. He led all NFL quarterbacks in many major categories: passer rating, QBR, third-down percentage, completion percentage and more. He threw 34 touchdowns and nine interceptions. He was undefeated in December, had 114.4 passer rating and even led in yards per attempt with 8.5. All of this while playing with back issues, need I say more? Well just in case...Tony is now at full-health and has taken part of a full offseason for the first time in two years. Move along...nothing to see here.
QB2- Brandon Weeden
Weeden had a bit of up and down year. When Romo was forced to miss the Cardinals game, Weeden did not play very well in his absence. It was a bad outing for him, he was highly erratic and couldn't connect with Dez Bryant, who has some of the best hands in the NFL. But Brandon Weeden was spectacular when brought in in mop-up duty throughout "Romo's December to Remember." According to coach Wade Wilson, Weeden has been his most improved player in the offseason. All eyes will be on him come training camp to see if he can fight off the likes of Dustin Vaughan and Jameill Showers.
QB3- Dustin Vaughan
The Cowboys carried Vaughan on the roster all year long and now is his time to prove them right. He's got size at 6'5, 240 lbs, and has a cannon of an arm. He had some moments in the preseason that definitely got people wanting more. If Dustin can pull it all together in his second year, he may be able to wrestle away the number two spot. There are certainly plenty of people that are hoping for him to make that leap. Now, Vaughan will have a battle ahead of him because they brought in another arm for him to compete with in Showers.
QB4- Jameill Showers
The Cowboys sure love those undrafted quarterbacks, don't they? Showers was a product out of both Texas A&M and UTEP. Showers transferred to UTEP after he was beat out for the starting role by Johnny Manziel. It worked out well for Showers who started all 13 games at El Paso and threw for 1,858 yards and 12 touchdowns. He also had 312 rushing yards and four rushing touchdowns to match. Showers was thought to be mainly a camp arm, but others like Bryan Broaddus and Nick Eatman believe he can be more.
So, the depth chart hasn't seen much change since last season. In a way you can argue that they just hope to have better play from Brandon Weeden. With Dustin Vaughan, they hope to see him show strides of improvement in his mechanics, footwork and accuracy. Jameill Showers will have the toughest task of just hoping he can make the roster even if it is only the practice squad. And for Tony Romo, it's just business as usual.
