Making our way down to 53.

With just over an hour and a half until final rosters have to be in for NFL teams, word about the latest cut on the Dallas Cowboys surfaced. Offensive lineman Emmett Cleary is being released.


The #Cowboys are releasing G Emmett Cleary, source said. They had received a few trade calls about him earlier in camp.

Cleary was obviously near the bottom in terms of the Dallas Cowboys offensive line, but he was still figured to make the team’s roster. We’d seen Cleary get work at both guard and tackle, but apparently it wasn’t enough to justify keeping him on the 53-man roster.

Perhaps Cleary’s release is an indication that on-the-bubble offensive lineman Byron Bell will make the team. A few had speculated that Chaz Green’s roster spot could have been in jeopardy as well, but it makes sense now that he’s safe.

What’s interesting is in Ian Rapoport’s tweet he mentions that the Cowboys had received trade calls for Cleary earlier in camp. You have to wonder why the Cowboys wouldn’t pull the trigger on that, but at the time he was in the mix for the left guard position.
