The Cowboys bring in the nine-year veteran as extra depth at linebacker after losing Rolando McClain to a 10-game suspension.

Exactly a week after reports surfaced that the Cowboys were talking to Justin Durant as a possible fill-in for the suspended Rolando McClain, the Cowboys today announced that they have signed Durant to a one-year deal.

Justin Durant, who will turn 31 in September, is a known quantity in Dallas. He was a defensive captain in 2014 before leaving for Atlanta last year - and Durant knows the Cowboys scheme well.

If nothing else, Durant will provide the Cowboys with some cheap insurance and an additional option as they head into camp. The Cowboys wanted him on a 2-3 year deal a year ago, so why not try him out now on a one-year deal?

Rob Phillips of DallasCowboys.com summarizes the move:


Durant played in 16 games (12 starts) for the Cowboys in 2013 and 2014, producing 73 tackles, 5 pass breakups and an interception. He signed a three-year contract with the Falcons in 2015 and started 12 games, totaling 82 tackles, 3 pass breakups and a forced fumble. Atlanta waived him in February.

To make room for Durant on the roster, the Cowboys waived defensive tackle Casey Walker.
