Remember when there was all sorts of drama about rookie contracts? Geezer.

The Dallas Cowboys reaped the benefits of the rookie pay scale again. It was announced that they have signed first round draft pick Zack Martin. This leaves only second round selection DeMarcus Lawrence unsigned among the 2014 draft class.

Details of the contract are not available, but it will likely be in line with that received by last year's number 16 pick.

. . . last year's No. 16 pick, quarterback E.J. Manuel, received a four-year deal worth $8.8 million. Manuel got a $4.8 million signing bonus along with that contract. Martin can likely expect something similar.

Even with the advantages teams now have dealing with rookies under the CBA, this is still early for the Cowboys to get their first-round selection under contract.

Clearly, the biggest contract issues the Cowboys face are getting second deals done with stars Dez Bryant and Tyron Smith, and figuring out what is going on with disgruntled backup quarterback Kyle Orton. No longer having to go into protracted negotiations just to get someone who has never played a down of professional football signed, and not having to worry about greatly overpaying them on that rookie deal, certainly is to the teams' benefit. What was once the biggest story through the dead time of summer is now no longer a story at all.
