Dallas Likely To Get Three Seventh Round Compensatory Picks

It appears likely that Dallas will have three additional picks at the end of the draft. For a team that prides itself on picking up value in the UDFA market, those should be very useful.

The actual awarding of compensatory picks in the NFL Draft will not happen until the owners' meeting in March. But for a couple of years now, a draftnik named Craig Turner has been putting out projections of what compensatory picks will be awarded. Our old frenemy Jimmy Kempski has been publishing those projections, and the 2014 prediction is out. Mr. Turner was very close last season, getting 24 of the 32 picks exactly right. He had five other picks going to the correct team, but not the correct round, and missed completely on only three picks.

That is fairly good, considering that the NFL has never explained the exact process they use to award these. This year, Turner predicts the Dallas Cowboys will get three additional picks in the seventh round. That falls in line with what most seem to expect.

The initial reaction to getting three picks that are essentially after the end of the regular draft might be a bit meh. But the Cowboys are a team that should be able to use these to very good effect. In recent years, Dallas has done quite well with finding undrafted free agents that go on to contribute to the team. Tony Romo is the biggest example, but you can also include names like Ron Leary and Cole Beasley. Those extra three picks, along with the three seventh-round picks the Cowboys already have, mean that the team can basically lock up priority UDFAs without having to worry about someone else coming along and signing them. That gives Dallas a total of 11 shots to find players, six in the seventh round, discounting any trades.

Who might the Cowboys be interested in? I took a look at some players who project to fall in the seventh round or just outside it using the CBSSports.com big board. (At this point in the process, things are a bit arbitrary, and the choice is based on past experience with their board and ease of use.) I then cross referenced it against the current list of Combine invitees, and came up with some names that I think the Cowboys staff may have their eye on in Indianapolis, anticipating that these players might still be available as those seventh-round picks come up. None of these are ideal, of course, but could be someone the team would want to try coaching up. Of course, the team would also be able to use those late picks to snatch up players who unexpectedly slip, but I wanted to keep it simple for the sake of discussion. (Players in order listed by CBS.)

I like it! However, I would modify it like this:

Rounds 1 thru 6

Aaron Donald, Pitt, DT – Probably the most popular choice for the Cowboys so far, Donald’s quickness and ability to push the pocket and get up field quickly makes him a popular choice in the middle of the first round for Dallas. His lack of height may scare some teams away, but his dominant week at the Senior Bowl and ability to play in a 4-3 defense should attract Dallas.

Kony Ealy, Missouri, DE – His size at 6-5, 275 pounds means gives him the frame to be a dominant force off the edge. His ability to move inside and outside could also give him some versatility in this 4-3 scheme. If the Cowboys take Ealy, the consensus seems to be that he hasn’t reached his potential and may need some time to develop and tap into that, but the ceiling is high here because of his athleticism.

Louis Nix, Notre Dame, DT – Nix may not fall into the typical mold the Cowboys use on the defensive line and may fit more as a nose tackle for a 3-4 team at 6-2, 345 pounds. He might have trouble keeping his weight down to where he can be a mobile defensive tackle that gets up the field the way Rod Marinelli likes. But the Cowboys could take the chance, in which case he’d fill in as the new 1-technique in Dallas.

Timmy Jernigan, FSU, DT – The lasting image of Timmy Jernigan is going to be him watching, out of breath, on the sideline during crunch time of this year’s national championship game. It was a damning moment for what is otherwise considered one of this draft’s brightest defensive linemen. Jernigan notched 63 tackles, 11 tackles for loss and 4.5 sacks last year.

Ra’Shede Hageman, Minnesota, DT – Hageman certainly stands out from a physical aspect, as he tips the scale at 6-6, 311 pounds. The first-team All-Big Ten selection was one of the standout defensive tackles at this year’s Senior Bowl, along with Donald. Conventional wisdom says Hageman could fit with the Cowboys as an oversized three technique tackle, similar to Jason Hatcher.

Zack Martin, OT, Notre Dame – A somewhat surprising target, considering the Cowboys just spent a high draft pick on Travis Frederick. Martin was fantastic at the Senior Bowl as an offensive tackle, though some think he projects as a guard at the next level. Depending on who else is available, the Cowboys could opt to shore up their offensive line for the foreseeable future with another high pick.

Round 7

Russell Bodine OG/C North Carolina

Kerry Hyder DT Texas Tech

Taylor Hart DE Oregon

Kadeem Edwards OG Tennessee St

Jay Bromley DT Syracuse

Cornelius Lucas OT Kansas St

John Urschel OG Penn St

Eathyn Manumaleuna DT Brigham Young

Ethan Westbrooks DE West Texas A&M

Zach Kerr DT Deleware

the combine in 3 weeks will shed some light on a few players that could jump into the 7th....it could also put guys up higher that in return will drop some projected 5th or 6th rounders down to the 7th....a lot of moving parts at the moment

Dallas may be inconsistent drafting in rounds 1-7 (although they have been better overall the past few years IMO), but we have done a nice job finding UDFAs. This will allow us to draft guys that would've been our priority UDFAs. Typically those are guys for whom we had a draftable grade but were not drafted. You never know when you'll find the next Romo, Austin, Bailey, Church, Beasley etc. With a few extra 7ths we won't have to get into a bidding war with other teams for those types of players. The bottom line is the more picks we have, the more chances we have to hit on a player (I know we can miss too). It would be nice to get a 3rd or 4th rounder one of these years. Who knows, maybe Hatcher will bring us a higher compensatory pick next year?

I'd have to look up the success of 7th rounders but they do make clubs and contribute on occasion. The way players are picked over these days there aren't as many as yesteryear but they do happen. Wasn't Ratliff a 7th?

Ok, looked it up. The data is a wee bit old (99-08) but not bad.

Of those 6th and 7th rounders drafted over that 10 year period, 73% started at least one game in their careers. 22% were starters for at least one year. 2% made the Pro Bowl at least once.

Those puppies are valuable.

BTW, I think it is almost certain Dallas will try to get into the 6th round with a couple of the 7th round picks.
Teams generally hate sitting out large sections of the draft and going 70 picks is a long time.

Though Dallas could also use the trade down method if the player they like most is rated in that late 20s/early 30s area (maybe pryor or donald).
16 for ~27 plus a 3rd and a 6th works. And in that scenario you may well see Dallas try to package things to move up as they target guys in rounds 2 and 3.

End of the day having 11 picks going in is very cool.
Maximizing that haul is very important.
They need to use it to grab guys that can make rosters.

can't trade compensatory picks at all.
though dallas has its own allotment of 7th already.

Wasn't talking about a trade but want kind of player you could get for a 7th rounder. I took what he was saying wrong. But my point is solid.

Great point and idea about a trade down. I think this is a very good idea for us with our needs.
