When the Cowboys announce their selection at pick #4, will it be the player you love the most? Here are a few guys whose name I would love to hear.
It was a lovely evening. Two adults getting all dressed up, spending a lot of money on a nice dinner and romantic ambiance - that's what love is all about. As I look around the restaurant, I see other couples doing the same thing. Society has tricked us all into thinking that paying for overpriced food in a dim lighted room while the waitresses attempt to convince us that we are an adorable couple - makes for a good time. And as I sit across the table, looking into my darling wife's eyes, I can't help getting caught up in the moment as only one thing enters my mind - who are the Cowboys taking with the number four pick?
Does that make me a bad person? Of course not, she has no idea. The mystifying look on my face only further sells the idea that she was saying something interesting. It's a win-win.
In my defense, the Cowboys decision at four is a big one. It's something that weighs on my mind constantly. Will it be a quarterback? Will it be a defensive star? Will it not be anyone at all because the pick gets traded away? These are all possibilities. The Cowboys have some options when April gets here. Everyone has their favorites and while it's bound to change a handful of times over the next couple months, here are my day-one draft man-crushes.
Jalen Ramsey
If you haven't read any of my colleague Michael Sisemore's write-ups about Ramsey, don't fret - another one will be around soon. He loves Ramsey and for good reason. The Florida State cornerback is a special athlete. He's got great size and great explosiveness. At 6'1" and 205 pounds, he's got the physical stature to handle big wide receivers at the line of scrimmage.
But disrupting routes is only one part of his game. He's got some speed too. He's got quick burst speed and he's got long-stride speed. As a member of the FSU track team, Ramsey showcased his sprinting and long-jumping skills. His athleticism will allow him to do a lot of good things on the football field.
And he's a closer. Last season, he had 50 tackles and 10 pass break-ups. Ramsey has strong ability to read the play and react on the ball. His flexibility could make him a potential candidate to slide into the safety position. If you combine him with Byron Jones, the Cowboys have the makings of a special secondary that could develop into a strong, long-lasting relationship.
Joey Bosa
Here goes the boom! If you want an edge rusher with power, Bosa is your guy. He's a very strong man. Bosa has a lot of power in his hands and can overpower blockers at the point of contact. He plays with a high level energy and is a relentless pass rusher, but his skills in the running game make him a complete player. With natural strength and active hands, he is able to impose his will on his opponents.
Last season, Bosa had five sacks. He also had 51 tackles, with 16 of them behind the line of scrimmage. In 2014, he had 13.5 sacks as well as four forced fumbles. He's just one of those guys that lives around the ball and will be a disturbance in the backfield.
Carson Wentz
If a quarterback is who the Cowboys have atop their board when they are on the clock, then I am all for it. And if that quarterback is Carson Wentz, then that's fantastic. I'll be on board. The North Dakota State quarterback just does a lot of things right. For starters, he's got the right build. He stands tall in the pocket at 6'5" and has operated in a pro-style system. Wentz has great pocket awareness, sees the field well, and has a strong arm to place the ball where it needs to be. He handles pressure well and possesses good footwork to escape defenders. He has great accuracy and has the ability to throw receivers open.
Wentz is moving up the draft board and more and more people have him as the top quarterback in the draft. A couple months ago, many were saying there wasn't a quarterback in this draft that was worthy of one of the top picks in this draft. A couple months from now, we'll find out.
Who do you love?
