With the fourth week of NFL action coming to a close, it’s time to start looking ahead for future fantasy matchups. Which free agent players helped their cause with good performances this weekend? Here are some waiver wire pickups that could help boost your fantasy roster.
Quarterback
Trevor Siemian - owned in 5% of Yahoo leagues
The Broncos quarterback had a great game against the Cincinnati Bengals, throwing for 312 yards and four touchdowns. He also had his first game without an interception and finished with a 132.1 QB rating. This was only his third career NFL start, so was this just a fluky game or could he be turning a corner? With receiving weapons like Demaryius Thomas and Emmanuel Sanders, who both had 100+ receiving yards and combined for three TDs, Siemian definitely has some upside potential.
Carson Wentz - owned in 19 % of Yahoo leagues
It pains me to say this, but Carson Wentz is looking like the real deal. While there is a lot of hype for him in the real-life football game, he is proving to be a reliable contributor in the fantasy game as well. He won’t blow up your fantasy stat line with big numbers, but after his first 300+ yard performance, he could be on the right track. He now has five touchdowns and no interceptions. He could be a nice stash player should the Eagles offense keep putting points on the board.
Running Back
Wendell Smallwood - owned in 1 % of Yahoo leagues
The Eagles ran the ball 30 times for 125 yards against the Steelers, but it was the fifth-round rookie that had the bulk of the carries. Smallwood would have 17 carries for 79 yards and would score a touchdown. It’s tough to say how the Eagles coaches will utilize their RBs going forward, but this is definitely something to keep an eye on.
Cameron Artis-Payne - owned in 19 % of Yahoo leagues
The Panthers backup running back got the first start filling in for injured Jonathan Stewart. It wasn’t a strong performance as he only had 47 yards on 12 carries. But he faced a very tough Minnesota defense (Kelvin Benjamin didn’t have a single catch). With Stewart expected to miss more time and Artis-Payne getting most of the carries (five rushes for Fozzy Whittaker), he could provide some short-term help for those needing help at running back.
Wide Receiver
Terrelle Pryor - owned in 19 % of Yahoo leagues
With an injury to rookie standout Corey Coleman and the suspension of Josh Gordon, the Browns #2 WR option suddenly has some strong fantasy appeal. But things got even more intriguing when this news broke.

Pryor did a little bit of everything on Sunday with eight catches for 144 yards, four carries for 21 yards, three completions for 35 yards, finishing with 23.9 fantasy points. He was clearly Cody Kessler’s favorite target as he looked his way 14 times. Should he continue to see time at QB, he becomes a very sneaky play for a WR eligible player going forward.
Kevin White - owned in 49% of Yahoo leagues
Yes, the Bears are a bad team but one thing they had going for them in their beatdown on Sunday night was the emergence of White. The Bears drafted this guy to be opposite of Alshon Jeffery and continue to put big wideouts on the outside for Jay Cutler. They now have Brian Hoyer in as Cutler deals with a thumb injury but Hoyer found White for some amazing catches. White can be low-end WR2 or better yet flex him out.
Tight End
Cameron Brate - owned in 2% of Yahoo leagues
With the release of Austin Seferian-Jenkins, the Buccaneers new starting tight end will now get the lion's shares of targets from that position. And he didn’t waste any time making an impact. Brate would have five catches for 46 yards, but he would find the end zone twice. He would be targeted 10 times. With one big game under his belt, it doesn’t do much to make anyone feel like he can sustain start-worthy production, but breaking on the scene like this does create an intriguing possibility.
Zach Miller - owned in 44% of Yahoo leagues
He was the only Bear to score touchdowns against the Cowboys and for someone needing a tight end, Miller is a good option. Hoyer is a guy that likes to get the ball out quick to avoid mistakes, that makes Miller and even better target. Going forward, the Bears may involve this tight end a lot more.
Kicker
Dustin Hopkins - owned in 5% of Yahoo leagues
Hopkins is a great pickup right now as he continuously outshines his projected numbers. Anyone needing a kicker should look his way as he’s been tried and true. He’s got 38 points in three games and climbing.
Greg Zuerlein - owned in 1% of Yahoo leagues
The Rams finally learned how to score touchdowns but that doesn’t mean that Zuerlein isn’t still a great pickup. He made the list last week too and is being disrespected out there folks! He’s outperforming his projections every week as well.
Defense
Detroit Lions - owned in 4% of Yahoo leagues
The Lions defense has a matchup with the Bears and Chicago loves to turn the ball over. Hopefully, Ziggy Ansah will be back but this should be a game where the Lions could have a big day defensively and a bounce-back game after failing to complete the comeback against the Packers.
Jacksonville Jaguars - owned in 3% of Yahoo leagues
The Jags defense is coming along strong and they get a macthup with the Colts. Though the Colts pulled it off against the Chargers late, Indianapolis is still an offense that turns the ball over and can’t protect their quarterback. The Jags got 17.68 points against the Ravens, another team that doesn’t protect very well, and the Jaguars have a good defensive line. Look for them to outperform their projections again this week.
