Looking for some nice free agent players to add to your team? Let BTB help with our latest installment of waiver wire pickups for Week 5.
Another fantasy week in the books. Hopefully, your team is doing okay. I was fortunate enough to be Julio’d in both my leagues. It was a great feeling. Nothing like watching your opponents WR reel off a 300 yard receiving performance. Every highlight on the Red Zone channel was just Julio running. It was like watching Forrest Gump, he just wouldn’t stop running.
Anyway, I’m not here looking for sympathy (unless you got some). I’m hear to help. It’s time to keep the roster churning as we take a look at this week’s hot free agent prospects.
Quarterback
Brian Hoyer - owned in 5 % of Yahoo leagues
Owning a Bears quarterback doesn’t actually give you goosebumps, but they can spot start you to victory if you pick the right moments. Just like Jay Cutler before him, Hoyer enters a situation where there will be plenty of passes being thrown. Coming off two straight 300+ yard games, each with two touchdowns, he’s putting up respectable numbers. There is something to be said about garbage time fantasy points and Hoyer could see plenty of that in Chicago. Granted, Cutler may return soon, but after Hoyer just led the team to their first win of the season, the QB job might be up for grabs. The Bears next three opponents are in the top 10 in allowing the most fantasy points to quarterbacks.
Paxton Lynch - owned in 1 % of Yahoo leagues
If your QB is on a bye or you have been hit hard with an injury and need a Week 5 filler, you might want to roll the dice on Lynch. After Trevor Siemian injured his shoulder on Sunday, Lynch could get his first career start. And what better way to begin your NFL career than facing the team that gives up the most fantasy points to opposing quarterbacks (Atlanta, 26.3).
Running Back
Terrance West, BAL - owned in 28 % of Yahoo leagues
The Ravens running back situation is a mess. You don’t know from one week to the next which player will be the team’s workhorse back. And even if you did, they could easily just not show up on the fantasy stat sheet. It’s a scary thing. But Sunday provided an anomaly - a running back actually performed well. Terrance West was that running back. He had 113 yards on 21 carries and a touchdown. This is, by no means, a reason to get excited, but it’s something to make note of.
Kenneth Dixon, BAL - owned in 25 % of Yahoo leagues
If one Ravens running back doesn’t get you excited, how about a second one? The rookie is expected to see some action this week and could slowly start taking over the lead back role. It’s hard to say how this transition will go, but if I had to put my ticket in a hat, it would be Dixon’s. His skill set provides the biggest upside of any other Ravens ball carrier.
Bilal Powell - owned in 22 % of Yahoo leagues
When Matt Forte was carted off for X-rays, the running back situation in New York became uncertain. Powell is primarily a third down back used in the passing games, but his touches are sometimes enough to be fantasy relevant. If he is asked to take on a larger role due to Forte missing time, Powell will be a good fantasy play.
Wide Receiver
Quincy Enunwa, NYJ - owned in 37 % of Yahoo leagues
The Jets receiver had two nice games to open the season, but has since fizzled. With Eric Decker’s season in jeopardy, Enunwa could find himself in line for a steady dose of targets going forward. He’s only had 9.7 points over the last two weeks, but he’s gotten 18 targets and that’s a positive sign.
Robert Woods - owned in 7 % of Yahoo leagues
With the news of Sammy Watkins lost for the year, Woods fantasy stock took a big jump. He had a solid game with 89 yards receiver and should see a good dose of looks from here on out.
Dontrelle Inman, SD - owned in 1 % of Yahoo leagues
When Keenan Allen went down to injury, this opened the door for both Travis Benjamin and Tyrell Williams to get more fantasy goodness. But neither of them had more than 50 yards receiving against the Saints on Sunday. Instead, it was third-year receiver, Dontrelle Inman who snagged all the touches. Inman was Philip Rivers favorite target as he had seven catches (11 targets) for 120 yards. One good week doesn’t make a fantasy worthy starter and he has been essentially invisible up until Sunday, but if his targets continue, this is someone to keep an eye on.
Chris Hogan - owned in 24 % of Yahoo leagues
Guess who’s back. Back again. Brady’s back. Tell a friend. Sure, Hogan has been a complete non factor this season after an impressive preseason. But Tom Brady comes back this week and it could revitalize Hogan’s fantasy relevance. It also may not, but it could be worth taking a flyer on if you need help at wide receiver. And you do. That’s why you’re reading this.
Tight End
Cameron Brate - owned in 10 % of Yahoo leagues
If you didn’t jump at his 16 point performance in Week 3, it’s okay. Not many did. The Buccaneers tight end isn’t owned in many leagues. He didn’t have a strong game on Sunday (five catches for 67 yards), but he’s still getting plenty of looks. He had eight targets, which was the fourth most for tight ends on Sunday. That’s two straight game with a good dose of targets and that could translate into fantasy production as the year goes on.
Hunter Henry - owned in 31 % of Yahoo leagues
The rookie tight end had a nice debut as the Chargers starting tight end on Sunday. He had five catches for 76 yards and a touchdown. Antonio Gates is dealing with a hamstring injury and you never know from week to week if he’s going to be healthy enough to play. Henry has stepped in and played well in Gates absence and if the veteran tight end misses more time, the kid would make a nice tight end option.
