This catch is just one example of how well Dak Prescott and Amari Cooper can connect on the field.

Welcome back to the Film Room! This week we’re taking a closer look at Dallas’ performance in the Wild Card game.

We love this play for two reasons. It’s a great example of Dak Prescott understanding the scheme and the coverage, and it highlights the connection Prescott has with WR Amari Cooper.

At the beginning of the fourth quarter, the Cowboys have the ball around midfield and it is second down with eight yards to go. They are in an empty set with two receivers to the left and three receivers spread to the right.

The Seahawks are in a Cover 2 shell. Defensive back Justin Coleman is lined up over Cole Beasley, the number two receiver on the right side. When Beasley hitches up at six yards, Coleman sits on the route.

Linebacker Bobby Wagner is lined up over the number three receiver, in this case tight end Dalton Schultz. Schultz releases vertically up the field, and Wagner follows him. This leaves no one in the middle of the field, so when wide receiver Amari Cooper (who is lined up outside of Beasley) runs a dig route, he is wide open.

Cooper catches the ball 19 yards down the field, but he is able to turn it into a 34-yard gain. This sets up a touchdown by running back Ezekiel Elliott four plays later, which gives the Cowboys the lead late in the game.

We expect to see way more plays like this in the 2019 season.
