Cowboys Mock Draft Roundup: First Round Offensive Linemen

There is a big and growing school of thought arguing that the Cowboys should draft an offensive lineman with their first pick in the 2011 draft.

On Monday, we looked at the players that will likely be available for the Cowboys at the #9 spot. The vast majority of mock drafts project either a CB in Prince Amukamara, a DE or the occasional OLB to be available. There are arguments to be made for and against all of these positions, but what seems to be clear is that the Cowboys are unlikely to address their biggest position of need, the offensive line, with the number nine pick.

Gary Horton of Scouts, Inc., weighs in on why offensive tackle is the top need for the Cowboys...

Doug Free a better run blocker than pass protector?
but he did pretty damn good vs the top pass rushers in the NFL last year.

Would Free be a better RT than LT, yes most likely, but when you don't have a proven LT to replace Free you don't move him. Free has proven to be a good LT why move him and if you do where are you going to find a LT that can come in day one and start.

you draft a starting RT, Carimi, Castanzo, or Sherrod then you start developing them to become a LT. In a few years when you think they are ready make the switch.

Why? Free is better at LT than RT and if you draft a guy and he turns out to be a good RT, why move him?

...and you say this why? You put your best tackle on the left side, and your second best tackle on the right. If you have two LTs, then you are in a grand position.

RTs are usually road graders who don't have the lateral agility of LTs. If you get to tackles with lots of lateral agility, you've got your bookends for several years to come. (providing they are starting quality tackles of course)

Your best pass blocker on the left and best run blocker on the right. That is not advanced calculus folks.

What if it's the same player? You know, ala Flozell Adams? :muttley:

I'm talking about down the road when Free may lose a step and if the RT you draft has developed in to what you think can play LT then swap them.
