Every year, teams take from the team that wins the Super Bowl. Should Dallas attempt it with Logan Ryan?
We’re back scouring the league for some quality players that can help the Dallas Cowboys improve. A lot of times you will see that teams that win the Super Bowl are usually picked to the bone for their free agent talent. The New England Patriots just won their fifth championship and Bill Belichick doesn't offer big contracts. One of their cornerbacks is set to be a free agent, should the Cowboys take a shot at bringing him in?
Before we get into that, everyone knows that the Cowboys have four defensive backs set to hit the open market. They may want to keep them all, only two should really be considered. Those two are the veterans Barry Chruch and Brandon Carr. J.J. Wilcox can hit, but he’s not been a consistent player. Morris Claiborne may have some upside but he’s almost always hurt and you can’t rely on him. The team needs to get better and you don’t get better by re-signing guys you can’t depend on. Now, let’s look into Logan Ryan.
CB, Logan Ryan, 25, Patriots, 5’11, 195 lbs.
Ryan spent his collegiate career with Rutgers where he was selected to the second All-Big East team as a sophomore. The very next season, Ryan would make the first-team All-Big East. He would also be named an All-American that season in addition to other achievements.
He decided to forego his senior season and declare for the NFL draft in 2013. He was a very impressive player throughout the draft process going from a second-round projection to the first for some pundits. On draft day, Ryan slid to the third round where he was gobbled up by the Patriots at 83rd overall.
In October of his rookie season, Ryan scored his first touchdown after intercepting a Geno Smith pass and taking it back 79 yards for the score. The next week, he followed that performance with two sacks on cornerback blitzes and forced fumble against the Dolphins. In week 16, Ryan helped the Patriots to a 41-7 rout of the Ravens with two interceptions. Ryan finished his rookie year with 35 tackles, two sacks, five interceptions, and a forced fumble.
The very next season, Ryan would start six games but appear in all of them. He was really a solid and underrated player in that 2014 championship season. He had 42 tackles and two interceptions on the year with a forced fumble.
In 2015, Ryan would start 14 of 16 games, appearing in all of them and having a breakout season. He recorded 74 tackles and a whopping 14 passes defended with four interceptions earning himself the starting gig next to Malcolm Butler.
This season, Ryan would again start next to Butler for the 2016 season. He led the league in tackles by a cornerback with 92 on the season. The Patriots had a surprisingly good year for their pass defense, just outside the Top-10. Ryan was able to notch two more interceptions, 11 passes defended, and a sack in 2016 on the way to his second World Championship with the Patriots.
Overall, Ryan has been a pretty consistent player since entering the league but he could be looking for another team in 2017. The Cowboys need better players and Logan Ryan is more consistent than any cornerback they have. Perhaps Ryan’s best attribute is the fact that he plays every game as he’s appeared in all 64 games of his career. Why not make a play to grab Logan Ryan, seems like a great fit for what they need.
