Free agent Gavin Escobar looks to be another in a long line of bad second-round picks for the Cowboys.

NFL free agency is an ongoing process, and right now teams are trying to scoop up bargains and reclamation projects. Like the Kansas City Chiefs, who are bringing in Cowboys tight end Gavin Escobar for a visit.

Escobar was drafted in the second round of the 2013 draft in hopes of being a complement and heir to Jason Witten. But like so many tight ends before him, it never materialized in Dallas. Either the player wasn’t talented enough, or he falls victim to the Cowboys love (and rightfully so) of Jason Witten. It’s just hard to take a player like Witten off the field.

With the recent extension given to Witten by the Cowboys, and with players like Geoff Swaim, Rico Gathers and possibly James Hanna ready to man the backup spots in 2017, there just isn’t room or need for Escobar anymore.

He will likely join the long list of Cowboys’ second-round picks who never lived up to their billing. Over the past decade, starting in 2006, the Cowboys have had a miserable record in the second round of the draft.

2006 - TE Anthony Fasano: Wasn’t awful, but was the first victim of “he’s not Jason Witten” in Dallas.

2007 - No second round pick

2008 - TE Martellus Bennett: Very talented but received marginal playing time, again a Witten victim.

2009 - No second round pick

2010 - LB Sean Lee: The Cowboys score, even though it was touch-and-go there for a few years as injuries almost waylaid this pick.

2011 - LB Bruce Carter: The Cowboys went back to the linebacker well for a second year, it didn’t work out this time.

2012 - No second round pick

2013 - TE Gavin Escobar

2014 - DE DeMarcus Lawrence: We’ll still waiting to make a final determination, has had moments of great play, but injuries, suspensions and inconsistency have held him back.

2015 - DE Randy Gregory: His drug issues might crush his career and turn this into a wasted pick.

2016 - LB Jaylon Smith: Fingers are crossed that he will break the curse!
