The Cowboys played their cards right in free agency and got four comp picks in return, now they need to utilize them right.

The NFL announced compensatory draft picks for the 2018 draft today. As was widely predicted, the Cowboys received four additional picks to compensate for free agents that were lost in the 2017 offseason. They got one fourth-round pick (#137 overall), two fifth-round picks (#171 and #173 overall), and one sixth-round pick (#208 overall).

The picks were awarded for the losses of the following players and likely in this order:

That currently gives the Cowboys 10 picks in the 2018 draft as follows

  • 1st rd: 1
  • 2nd rd: 1
  • 3rd rd: 1
  • 4th rd: 2 (one comp pick)
  • 5th rd: 2 (both comp picks)
  • 6th rd: 2 (one comp pick)
  • 7th rd: 1

The Cowboys lost their regular fifth-round pick in a trade that ended up being a pick used on Xavier Woods.

As of 2017 comp picks are trade eligible, giving the Cowboys plenty of ammunition to make moves in this draft if they should so choose. The last time they had four comp picks in 2016 they did alright for themselves.

With the Combine coming next week and then free agency opening, we are headed into prime offseason activity culminating in the draft at the end of April.
