The thinking went that Jaylon Smith, the Cowboys second-round draft pick in 2016, wouldn't be playing in the 2016 season. The nerve damage from his knee injury was something that needed time to heal and no one was sure when that would start happening. The Cowboys orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Copper, has high confidence that the nerve will heal, but as with all things medical, there is always uncertainty about when and even if something like that will happen.
That doesn't deter Jerry Jones. This morning on 105.3 The Fan, the Cowboys owner let it be known that Jaylon Smith will not start the season on IR as many of us guessed he would. Jones went further and stated that he thinks Smith could be available for Dallas in the playoffs. Classic Jerry. Not only is he going out on a limb medically, declaring that Smith will heal and will heal sooner than most imagined, but he has the Cowboys already in the playoffs. Well sort of. Jones wasn't that definitive on the issue, but he's thinking that way.
So if the Cowboys don't put Smith on IR, what else could they do. Todd Archer has the answers.
If the Cowboys choose not to place him on season-ending injured reserve when the season begins, what options remain? At the very least Smith will open training camp on the non-football injury list since the injury happened in college. The recovery from a torn ACL and LCL is generally nine months and Smith's injury happened Jan. 1.
When the Cowboys have to trim the roster to 53 players the week before the season, they could keep Smith on NFI, which would force him to miss at least the first six games and give him another six weeks to potentially practice and return to the field.
So Cowboys fans, do you believe it? Will Jaylon Smith play at any time in 2016, or is this just typical Jerry chutzpah?
