The defensive tackle room suddenly looks very crowded, and that’s a good problem to have. The Cowboys released their third unofficial depth chart of the 2018 season this week because the NFL requires all teams to do so prior to each preseason game.Ideally, even if it’s an unofficial depth chart, you’d hope that it was put together by Jason Garrett and his coaching staff after hours of debate and hand-wringing. The much more likely scenario however is that the depth chart probably originates from somewhere in the PR department, and if we’re lucky, a coach somewhere at least gave it a cursory glance.
  1. Be that as it may, the depth chart is something the Cowboys have put their name to, and even if you may want to take it with a grain of salt, it is still worth a look.

A first glance the depth chart doesn’t look much different from the one the Cowboys published prior to the Bengals game, except it’s been updated with the most recent signings (OC Jacob Ohnesorge, WR Dres Anderson, DT Caraun Reid, S Dominick Sanders, S Jeron Johnson). Additionally, they are still listing Randy Gregory as a fourth-teamer on this week’s depth chart, which we know is false.

But there is one position where there have been some significant changes, and that’s at defensive tackle. Here’s a look at the what the defensive line depth chart looked like prior to the second preseason game:

Add in David Irving, who could re-join the team in Week 5 after sitting out his suspension, and the Cowboys, for the first time in a long while, will be deep at defensive tackle. And that’s good news for a pass rush that was already graded as one of the best units in the league last year.

At some point prior to the season opener, the Cowboys will publish their first official depth chart of the 2018 season. And it might look something like this:

    depth_3.JPG

The Cowboys started both the 2016 and 2017 seasons with eight defensive linemen (and had one guy on suspension), so it’s not a given that they’ll keep more than eight players this year too.

But if they do keep a ninth guy, that last spot will likely come down to Daniel Ross, Kony Ealy, Caraun Reid, Brian Price, Charles Tapper, or Jihad Ward. Or they could swap one of those players for a tight end or safety currently on another roster. That’s what depth can do for you - when you have it.

Is Collins starting right when he gets back? Would think that he needs time to get up to speed but who knows

Wait, so if Crawford starts at DT does that mean Collins is going back to the 1Tech?

I'm confused. Is Crawford playing 1-tech? Woods is backing him up and Woods is most definitely a 1-tech. I thought we finally were headed in the right direction with a true 1-tech (Woods) and Collins/Crawford playing their ideal positions (3-tech). But that ^ doesn't reflect that.

It should be:

LDE - Lawrence, Taco
1DT - Woods, Price
3DT - Collins, Crawford
RDE - Gregory, Armstrong

The chart might be attempting to reflect who’s playing the most minutes. A space-eating one technique only helps in run downs.

is gregory better than taco right now? I guess we will see. I have been impressed with taco so far this preseason.

That's fair. In that case, I'd like to see Taco move inside in passing situations. I think he can get a lot of snaps if he splits LDE with Lawrence in base and 3-tech with Crawford in nickel/dime.

Ok, we kept 12 players on the d-line last year. I don't see going less than that this year. The ones listed are the 8 who will get the most snaps but Roddy likes fresh bodies and I'm betting the other 4 will be Ward,Price, Tapper and Ealy. Irving? Who knows with him. He missed all of TC and the blanket statement made in the article that he will be back for game five is a big assumption

I think Collins should be our three tech at least until irving comes back and that woods should be our one tech. I don't feel crawford should be on our starting lineup. Collins is a potential beast at the three and it showed last season before Irving came back. Teams were doubling Collins before Irving got back. Collins needs a guy next to him that would require a double. Our Defensive line has a chance to be awesome but we can't stick crawford in the starting lineup. He is a great effort guy but when he is doubled he gets washed out of plays we need someone who can absorb the double and hold their ground. I felt woods has done a great job of doing that.

If you’re going to keep Rico, a 3rd QB, 6 or 7 WRs you have to go lighter somewhere. I think they’ll go 10 DL. Price and Ward will make 53 and then Irving comes in for Ward week 5

It's about to get interesting this final week before the 53 deadline

That article states that we started the 2016 and 2017 seasons with 8 defensive linemen... that doesn't sound right to me. Don't we usually have like 10 or 11 at least?
