The latest trend in looking at the Cowboys and the 2014 draft? Noting that they rarely stick to their projected first-round position. In other words, don't bank on the Cowboys actually picking at #16 once draft day finally rolls around. For some data on said transactions, we'll look at a couple of articles.
Over at the mothership, Rowan Kavner explains:
Six of the past seven years, the Cowboys traded the first-round pick they were slotted for based on their record the previous season.
The 2011 NFL Draft marked the only time since 2007 the Cowboys stayed put and used the pick they were scheduled to have based on their record. They took Tyron Smith with the No. 9 pick overall and found their future star left tackle...
Pro Football Talk drops a different stat on us:
In 20 of the 25 drafts run by Cowboys owner/G.M. Jerry Jones, he has made a trade up or a trade down in round one. Twenty of 25. Eighty percent of the time, Jones makes a move.
OCC lays out a strategy here that says if you can trade up on the cheap this year, then do it. Meanwhile rabblerousr has consistently made the case of staying put or trading back as the best options.
