The Cowboys won their game against the Vikings on Sunday, albeit not in the dominating fashion many had expected.
But in power ranking parlance, a win does not necessarily equate to moving up in the rankings. In fact, in our weekly survey of power rankings, more rankings have the Cowboys moving down than up.
Cowboys move up
Week 10 Rankings (previous rankings in parenthesis)
CBSSports.com (Prisco): 10th (11th): "That was a big-time drive late to beat the Vikings. Now they face a tough game at the Saints."
Big Blue View (Giants): 11th (12th). "It was almost a really ugly loss for the 'Boys."
Oddsshark: 11th (12th). Oddsshark use a multitude of stats to establish an offensive and defensive power ranking, which they then adjust for the strength of schedule.
Peter King: 12th (13th): "Tony Romo led a winning drive inside of three minutes. I mean, I’m just saying."
Blogging The Boys (Your favorite blog): 12th (14th). "The Cowboys are 3-1 over their last four games, are tied in wins with the NFC North leader and are just one win behind three other division leaders. That can't be all that bad."
Bleeding Green Nation (Eagles): 13th (14th). "Can't say that their home win over the Vikings was impressive by any stretch, but Tony Romo led the team on a game winning touchdown drive."
Cowboys don't move
Sagarin NFL rankings: 8th (8th). These are rankings based on W/L record, points differential and schedule strength.
ProFootballTalk: 12th (12th): "If they only run the ball nine times against the Saints on Sunday night, the up-and-down Cowboys will fall back down to .500."
ColdHardFootballFacts: 12th (12th). This indicator ranks teams based on their average ranking across a range of CHFF's Quality Stats.
ESPN: 13th (13th): "Despite Sunday's return of DeMarco Murray, the Cowboys dropped back to pass on 87 percent of plays, most by any team in a game this season. "
Shutdown Corner: 13th (13th): "They seem determined to make winning the NFC East a lot harder than it should be. Part of that is they have zero commitment to the run game."
Cowboys move down
Pro Football Reference: 10th (9th). PFRs Simple Rating System (SRS) takes only two factors into account: strength of schedule and adjusted margin of victory.
Teamrankings.com: 12th (10th). This site measures the relative strength of all teams using team performance, home/away status, margin of victory and other factors.
CBSSports (Kirwan): 13th (11th): "The Cowboys are like the Bengals. They are inconsistent and have injury issues on the defensive side of the ball. The NFC East could be won with a 9-7 record and the Cowboys are still in the driver's seat."
Foxsports: 13th (11th): "It took the entire 60 minutes for the Cowboys to put away the Vikings, but that may not be a bad thing for this team in the long run. Romo needed to show his critics that he can win a game late."
Drafttek: 13th (12th). "Get ready for a big dose of nail-biters this year Cowboy fans . . . this injury-riddled, paper-mache defense makes no lead safe. Sean Lee is a stud but Romo is going to have to be sharper than he was today if Dallas is to outscore its opposition!"
WEEI.com: 13th (12th): "There is such a thing in the NFL as an ugly win, and the Cowboys got one Sunday. They added another mark in the win column, but they allowed Christian Ponder to look like a capable quarterback. Dallas’ defense gave up 393 total yards to one of the worst offenses in the league."
NFL.com: 14th (13th). "Funny how it was "All Quiet on the Twitter Front" after a certain quarterback went 7-of-9 on a last-minute drive to deliver a comeback win."
Newsday.com: 14th (12th). "Too much talent on this team for this win-one, lose-one treadmill the Cowboys are on. They’re good enough to run away with the division, but they’re still stuck in neutral."
BeatGraphs.com: 16th (13th). BeatGraphs provide rankings that cannot be defeated by a chain of A beat B beat C scenarios. In the end, when all ambiguity is removed, if A has beaten B, A will be ranked above B.
SB Nation: 16th (14th): "This is one Cowboys fan who felt better about the team right after their loss to the Broncos than after Sunday's skin-of-their-teeth escape from a dreadful Vikings squad. The passing game hasn't even approached the aggression and abandon it showed while going toe to toe with Peyton Manning, and when you adjust for opponent quality the secondary is now playing even worse. With every other NFC East opponent playing at a higher level than they were when they first encountered the Cowboys, Dallas will need to raise its game just to take the league's worst division."
The table below summarizes the power rankings for the four NFC East teams plus the Cowboys' Week 10 opponent. We will update the remaining power rankings when they are published.
